When I first read an article last week on Independent, I was offended and amused at the same time. I was offended because it insinuated that those who believe in Bible prophecy are foolish. I was amused because it postulated President Trump’s move to declare Jerusalem as the capital of Israel was designed specifically to appease evangelicals.
After a week of thinking about it, I’m less amused. I’m still offended, but I believe there may be some truth to the notion that this wasn’t really about being a good friend to Israel as much as solidifying his base. I’m not ready to declare that as the primary reason, but in light of recent events it seems more likely that it played a bigger role in his decision than I originally thought.
The key to it all is timing. He picked a time before Christmas when families and friends would be getting together. While it’s generally considered bad form to talk politics at such gatherings, it’s inevitable. This year, the political landscape is too high on people’s minds to ignore.
The President hasn’t had a ton of wins lately. The tax cuts will be important for the GOP and the President, but they aren’t getting the play they’d hoped for in the public. There’s just not a ton of excitement in a plan that’s been bogged down by infighting and discussion of corporate tax cuts. Despite the fact that cutting the corporate tax rate helps the vast majority of Americans in some way, the general public hasn’t taken the news as positively as it really is.
Combine this with the Mueller investigation and it’s clear the President needed a win that people could talk about.
There’s a flip side to all this. The timing wasn’t necessarily his. He had to either sign an extension or not. If his plan is to unveil a Middle East peace plan in the near future, there may not have been enough time to extend it again. We can assume part of his plan will involve Jerusalem. It has to for it to be even put on the table. All of this brings me back to my original assumption that he’s didn’t make the Jerusalem move solely for his base.

The real reason Trump declared Jerusalem the capital of Israel was because he feared losing his evangelical voter base
There are those evangelicals who believe in the prophecy of the ‘End of Days’ foretelling Jewish control of all Jerusalem, a war of civilisations, and a choice of Jews to either embrace Christianity or die in the wrath of God
I have got my latest Prayergram post. It is, quite aptly, on the topic of the day: the “Jerusalem Prayer”.
One passage reads “God bless Donald J Trump! He understands the real principles behind success. It is not being good at what you do or understanding theory and practice. It is being on the right side of the blessing of God. Whoever blesses Israel shall be blessed: whoever curses Israel shall be cursed.”
