Senator Al Franken has resigned. Sort of. We’ll see how it actually plays out, but it’s noteworthy that he said, “in the coming weeks I will be resigning as a member of the United States Senate.”
What does that mean? Why not just resign immediately? Is he holding onto hope that he’ll be vindicated to the point that he can rescind his resignation? We’ll wait to see reactions first before taking this line of questions further.
The narrative being pushed by mainstream media is that he wants to give the governor and his successor time to prepare. There’s also discussion that he wants to be there for important upcoming votes, but unless another Senator steps down in the meantime, his vote is meaningless. One lost Senate seat keeps the math essentially the same. The only difference is that if the GOP loses two votes on a bill, it would pass if Franken steps down now. If he’s there for the vote, losing two Republicans would end the same because Mike Pence would be the deciding vote.
