There’s a standing joke among longtime journalists covering American Presidents since Jimmy Carter. They all (other than President Obama) dangle the promise of moving the U.S. Embassy to Israel’s capital, Jerusalem. Then, throughout their terms, they come up with one reason or another to “delay” the move.
Will President Trump break the trend? His predecessor sort of broke the trend by not even pretending he was going to move the embassy. Many pro-Israel Americans who voted for Trump were disappointed when he initially didn’t keep his promise. Now, it seems like there’s a glimmer of hope that he might follow through.
It isn’t what he allegedly said but who he allegedly said it to that makes the latest embassy promise more… promising. According to Haaretz, he broke the news to Jordan’s King Abdullah and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas:
Is President Trump really going to move the embassy to Jerusalem this time
Trump informs Abbas, Jordan’s Abdullah he intends to move U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem
U.S. President Donald Trump informed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Jordan’s King Abdullah that he plans to move the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem on Tuesday, according to Abbas’ spokesman and Jordanian reports. Trump also called Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sissi to inform him of the decision.
Abbas warned Trump in response that the action will have “dangerous consequences,” says Abbas spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh. Abu Rudeineh said “the Palestinian stance is determined and steadfast – there will not be a Palestinian state without East Jerusalem as its capital according to decisions by the international community. Abu Mazen [Abbas] is now holding an emergency meeting in his bureau following the phone conversation with Trump.”
This move would send ripples that reach across the world. Most leaders would condemn the move even if they support Israel because it has long been believed permanent peace in the Middle East requires a two-state solution that would split Jerusalem.
My Take
The other standing joke among journalists who cover the Middle East is that the Palestinians will always claim they just need a little more in order to reach an agreement with Israel. Just a little more. Just a little more.
Despite repeated actions by Israel to make a lasting peace, the Palestinians and their allies have constantly pushed for more. They break back and forth between the narrative of “we want a two-state solution” and “we want to wipe Israel off the face of the earth.”
There is only one way to have peace in the Middle East as it pertains to Israel. Recognize their borders, acknowledge the whole land of Israel rather than saying they’re “occupying” portions of “Palestine,” and force the Palestinians to set up a homeland somewhere in the other 99.9% of the world. Their claims to the land are driven by a false narrative.
There should be no two-state solution within the borders of Israel. Jerusalem should be recognized as the permanent capital and the U.S. Embassy must be moved where it belongs.

Good post.
I think Trump is trying to distract again. The question we should be asking is “Distract from what ?”.
Perhaps from the Mueller probe that is now asking for Trump financial records regarding Deutche Bank and Trump/Trump family/Trump associate accounts – especially given the known and long-standing ties between Deutche Bank and Russian money-laundering activities.
Perhaps from the fact that Trump’s “endorsement” seems to be hurting Roy Moore rather than helping and that the GOP – after having abaondoned Roy Moore now feels they need him in the Senate (before or after they start ethics investigations and expulsion actions).
Perhaps from the fact that we now have public reports that an open shooting war with N. Korea is getting more likely all the time – due on large part (it can certainly be argued) to Trump’s public tweets antagonizing and belittling the already-unstable Kim Jong Un.
Perhaps from the fact that most of Europe is now turning against the US BECAUSE of Trump and his attitudes toward our (former?) European allies.
Perhaps from the fact that the Border Patrol union has publicly claimed that Trump is doing nothing to stem the out-of-control border crossings and that the “leaders” Trump has installed are as (if not more) corrupt and wasteful of taxpayer money than Obama’s appointees.
Whatever the reason, Trump continues to fail to even tread water – much less Make America Great. While Trump’s worshipers are threatening conservatives around the country, it appears the producers (conservatives) in this country are more-and-more “going Galt” and simply no longer supporting the GOP or the Trump mouthpieces that claim to speak for the GOP.
