Going into championship game week, eight teams still have a shot at filling the four spots in the college football playoffs. Here’s a brief breakdown of how it will play out:
ACC and SEC champions are in.
Some have thrown out speculation that even if Miami wins the ACC, they might still end up at #5. This is false. If they win, they’ll jump into the top four. If Clemson wins, they’ll retail their top spot.
As for the SEC, the winner between Georgia and Auburn is in.
Oklahoma is in with a win. If they lose, the Big 12 will once again have nobody representing the conference in the playoffs.
Alabama needs either Oklahoma or Wisconsin to lose.
If Wisconsin wins, they’re in. If they lose, then Ohio State needs Oklahoma to lose in order to sneak in. There will be a little controversy if they don’t get in, but Alabama will have a single loss against a very tough opponent. That should supersede Ohio State’s Big 10 championship with two losses, including an embarrassing drubbing at the hands of Iowa. The wildcard in this scenario is if Ohio State wins big. Beating an undefeated Wisconsin team by a large margin may give the committee what they need to move Ohio State above Alabama.
My prediction for the four big games:
- Clemson over Miami
- Georgia over Auburn
- Oklahoma over TCU
- Ohio State over Wisconsin
If I’m right, the final playoff picture will look like this:
- Clemson
- Oklahoma
- Georgia
- Alabama (or Ohio State if they win big)
In that scenario, I see Oklahoma playing Alabama in the championship game, unless Ohio State wins big. If they do, then it’ll be Oklahoma versus Clemson.
Like the previous two years, there won’t be a ton of controversy over the top four. There’s always a little, but it’s not what many experts (nor I) expected when the four-team playoffs were announced. I expected it to be a lot of turmoil with a couple of clear top teams and four or five teams with legitimate claims to the final two spots. So far, no teams have truly been shafted by the process and disputes have been minimal. This year is poised to yield the same results. Could the system really be better than expected?
