My mind is my weapon. My brother has his sword, King Robert has his warhammer, and I have my mind… and a mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge. That’s why I read so much, Jon Snow.
Tyrion Lannister A Game of Thrones
I hold the belief that reading sharpens the mind. One of the biggest detriments to conservatism are the loud and unarticulated. I don’t feel like naming names, but you probably know who they are. And then there are very well studied conservatives that are intellectuals. They go beyond simple talking points and can shift worldviews. If we are truly passionate about our ideas, we should read more about them. With Christmas shopping to be done, books may serve as a good gift to a fellow conservative. With the help of other writers here, I came up with a list of great reads for conservatives.
Fiction
Animal Farm by George Orwell
Written like a children’s story, this book is an adult level allegory. Published in 1945, Orwell perfectly captures what happens in communism/socialism. Originally a satire of the Russian Revolution, Animal Farm bears a striking resemblance to other communist countries including Romania. The pig, Napoleon, is exactly like communist dictator, Nicolae Ceaușescu. Animal Farm is the easiest read on this list and perhaps one of the cheapest, but well worth the read to get a stunningly accurate critique of communist revolutions. I would also say this book applies to any country that loses its way and creates a ruling class.
NonFiction
Federalist Papers and Anti-Federalist Papers
This was recommended by Konstantinos Roditis. Two sets of essays but the reason for reading them is all the same. These are a collection of essays written in favor of and in opposition to the US Constitution and Bill of Rights. These essays were authored by some of the brightest political philosophers in history including Alexander Hamilton and James Madison. This reading is imperative for someone to understand the original meaning of the US Constitution. Being older, this is one of the easiest to acquire on this list.
Crimes of the Educators: How Utopians Are Using Government Schools to Destroy America’s Children by Sam Blumenfeld & Alex Newman
Our very own Paige Rogers recommends this book. American author and veteran educator Samuel Blumenfeld and journalist Alex Newman have taken on the public education establishment as never before and exposed it for the de facto criminal enterprise it is. Crimes of the Educators reveals how the architects of America’s public school disaster implemented a plan to socialize the United States by knowingly and willingly dumbing down the population, a mission closer to success than ever as the Obama administration works relentlessly to nationalize K-12 schooling with Common Core.
Black Rednecks and White Liberals by Thomas Sowell
I recommend this book for a deeper understanding of the cultural divide in America, particularly white and black. In a series of long essays, this book presents an in-depth look at key beliefs behind many mistaken and dangerous actions, policies, and trends. It presents eye-opening insights into the historical development of the ghetto culture that is today wrongly seen as a unique black identity–a culture cheered on toward self-destruction by white liberals who consider themselves “friends” of blacks.
NurtureShock by Po Bronsen and Ashley Merryman
Also recommended by Paige Rogers is this unique counterargument against modern parenting practices. The central premise of this book is that many of modern society’s strategies for nurturing children are in fact backfiring. Nurtureshock is sort of a movement following research on parenting methods. I recommend you visit their website at very least.
Christian
Christian History Made Easy by Timothy Paul Jones
I think Christians should really understand the history of the Church because it is very connected to the history of western culture as we know it. If you think Jesus named Peter as the first Pope, you’re in for a wakeup call when actual history tells a different story. This is a great book to learn about the how the Church has struggled and grown over the centuries. In this book, you get the key points of the major events. This book is easy enough to read or even make a small group study out of.
God’s War on Terror be Walid Shoebat
Benjamin Wilhelm described this book in a previous article “We Forget” months ago calling it a must read for Christians. This is one of the best books available touching on the subjects of Islam, prophesy, and end times.
