In Ben Shapiro’s latest article, he touches on a very worthy topic when he states that:
“All human beings are capable of sin. And that means that the antidote to human frailty and brutality isn’t issuing broad-based mea culpas in behalf of groups, but working to instill virtue in individuals through prophylactic rules.”
And here: “The Left, in its refusal to acknowledge the inherent flaws in humanity, decided to do away with the rules.”
How to Stop Sexual Harassment: Return to Rules
‘My gender is terrible,” Politico Chief Economic Correspondent Ben White wrote earlier this week. Time Politics Editor Ryan League Beckwith tweeted, “Not tweeting tomorrow. Just retweeting women. Men: Join me.”
This is the trendy new habit on Twitter when another prominent man is outed for sexual harassment and sexual assault: Virtue-signaling men rush to the medium to repent on behalf of their sex. Men, they say, are disgusting creatures — but they know that, since they’re men. So leave them alone, ladies. They’re on your side.
Differing worldviews
This is an often implied but rarely stated fundamental difference between conservative and liberal worldviews. Conservatives believe that man in his natural state is flawed, and prone to sin, or at least the capacity to sin. Thus, the conservative approach is to contain and control these undesirables by means of rules and guidelines.
In direct contrast, the left despises societal rules, choosing instead to believe that man is pure as is, and only becomes tainted through societal oppressions. Therefore, no one is ever truly out of reach to them. Their solutions stem from a desire to prevent these oppressions from being sowed in the first place. But, as Shapiro explained, the result of this effort to relax any and all rules has been akin to a dam breaking. Why? Because there will always be people who do bad things.
Of course all people are not naturally bad – but some are. And because some are, and we don’t know which ones, there must be rules of containment and guidelines which encourage moral behavior.
What he missed
While I agree with the overall theme of Shapiro’s article, there is one thing I think he should have added: Yes, man is flawed, but that doesn’t mean we stop trying to correct him. While we might hate to admit it, humanity needs the passion from the Left just as much as the solutions from the Right.
The Left has well-meaning intentions that are primarily emotionally driven. In my opinion, this emotion is good to have as long as you don’t let it blind you to make unsafe choices. There’s a balance needed there, but there’s no denying we need emotional persons like this to remind us of what really matters when we get caught up in the daily bustle.
The balance
It’s not that conservatives believe bad men can’t be corrected; we do. In fact, I think you must believe anyone can be corrected if you are a believer in God. But you can’t allow yourself to be delusional about the evil man is capable of, or else you allow for the evil to hurt far too many people before the light can reach them.
