All of the pieces are falling into place. Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and GOP nominee for President, appears to be getting ready to announce that he’s running to replace Orrin Hatch as a U.S. Senator from Utah. The last piece of the puzzle is likely Hatch announcing his retirement.
He’s talking to all the right GOP power players in Utah. He’s on the campaign trail for candidates running in local elections, an action that often acts as a warm up for one about to start making his own campaign stops. He’s raising money for the GOP, particularly through House and Senate Republican fundraising channels. Lastly, he’s talking to journalists and pundits, giving them tidbits and hints.
At this point, the only thing left is making it official.
It would take a scandal the size of Roy Moore’s to keep him from winning. A Mormon, his brand of moderate conservatism would play well in a state that elected Hatch seven consecutive times. Hatch once said, “What do you call a Senator who’s served in office for 18 years? You call him home.” If he retires at the end of this term, he will have been in the Senate for 42 years.
We expect Hatch to announce his retirement and endorsement of Romney simultaneously.

Yet those who’ve spoken with Romney in recent days are convinced he’s prepared to jump in. After falling short in his quest for the White House and then being passed over by President Donald Trump for secretary of state, friends say Romney still has unquenched political ambitions.
On a campaign swing through Idaho last month for gubernatorial hopeful Tommy Ahlquist, Romney met with Republican mega-donor and wellness company executive Frank VanderSloot. Romney told the donor he was seriously thinking about running for Senate, according to several people familiar with the discussion.
