12 counts: Will Manafort also turn in Democrat super-lobbyist Tony Podesta?

Published

on

As CNN reported, based on a leak from Robert Mueller’s special counsel office, there was an indictment in the Russia probe unsealed today. And to nobody’s surprise, Paul Manafort and Rick Gates, one a former Trump campaign manager, the other a political and business associate of Trump’s, were ordered to surrender to federal authorities.

What’s next?

Certainly, investigators will interview and take depositions from both men. They will present the men (and their lawyers) with the indictment and the charges against them. A federal prosecutor will set the time for an arraignment with a judge, and the case will proceed with pleas and opening motions. The wheels of justice churn like a grist mill.

The charges

The 12 counts include two conspiracy charges, money laundering, acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign principal, false and misleading FARA statements, false statements and seven counts of failure to file reports of foreign banks and financial accounts. These are all financial crimes for the most part, and they have little bearing on the Trump campaign’s Russia ties.

Paul Manafort, Rick Gates indicted by federal grand jury in Russia probe | Fox News

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2017/10/30/report-paul-manafort-rick-gates-to-surrender-to-special-counsel.htmlFormer Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his associate Rick Gates have been indicted by a federal grand jury Monday on 12 counts, according to the special counsel’s office. Manafort and Gates face the first charges in the special counsel’s investigation. This is also the first time the special counsel’s office has confirmed that a grand jury has been impaneled.

Tony Podesta’s problem

Manafort may provide ammunition for Mueller in his expanded investigation of Democratic super-lobbyist Tony Podesta, who has ties to various congressional Democrats and Bill Clinton.

The very charges against Manafort go to the heart of the Podesta link. In his work for the Ukraine, Manafort set up a group called European Centre for a Modern Ukraine (ECMU), which used Podesta’s lobbying group. These bear directly on the indictments, and could spell trouble for Democrats. Of course, the DNC, neck-deep in every part of the Russia connection, from the “dossier” to “fake news” and lying about it, denies any knowledge of anything.

Manafort To Turn Himself In To Feds | The Daily Caller

http://dailycaller.com/2017/10/30/paul-manafort-told-to-turn-himself-in-to-feds/Manafort walked into the FBI’s field office in Washington, D.C. Gates is a longtime associate of Manafort and serves as his junior partner at his firm. Gates became a point of interest in the investigation into Mueller after investigators found Gates name on documents linking Manafort’s firm to offshore companies that received payments from Eastern European politicians and businessmen.

Mueller Now Investigating Democratic Lobbyist Tony Podesta – NBC News

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/mueller-now-investigating-democratic-lobbyist-tony-podesta-n812776Under FARA, people who lobby on behalf of foreign governments, leaders or political parties must file detailed disclosures about their spending and activities with the Justice Department. Willful failure to file the forms is a felony and can result in up to five years in prison, though such prosecutions are rare.

The Podesta Group amended its FARA registration to accurately reflect its work with ECMU only after the payments were reported by the media. Manafort’s firm also filed a FARA registration after media reports in June disclosed its work in Ukraine from 2012 through 2014.

Are Dems As In-The-Dark As They Claim? | The Daily Caller

http://dailycaller.com/2017/10/29/what-did-dems-know-about-dossier-their-handling-of-imran-awan-affair-is-instructive/The denial is reminiscent of Ellison’s claims to have not heard of Democratic IT aide Imran Awan, despite being repeatedly informed of the major investigation involving him. In both the Awan and dossier affairs, Democratic leaders have said they did not have knowledge of major events that greatly concern them. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi professed unfamiliarity with the Awan investigation despite playing an important role in the handling of the case months ago as one of the House leaders who determined it warranted a criminal probe.

Final thoughts

This is just the beginning. But a few thoughts here.

For one thing, as Erick Erickson notes, we need to be careful in our assumptions. At this point, it doesn’t appear that the charges against Manafort are directly related to anything he did with the Trump campaign. Though the investigation was spurred on by the president’s firing of former FBI Director James Comey, that angle led to these charges against Manafort, who we all knew had Russian problems before he was hired by Trump. (I’m sure Manafort will pass his exceeding thanks for the jail sentence on to Trump, if he’s not pardoned.)

Another thing, is that we know the Democrats and the swamp-rats all over K-street have their paw prints on this whole Russia thing. If Mueller is just making his mark with these two indictments and then closing shop, Trumpists will hail it as exoneration (but it’s not really), while Democrats will howl that there’s no justice but in fact be relieved and use it to raise badly-needed cash.

But if more Trump-related charges come forth, without anything on the Democrat side, then perhaps Joe Cunningham has a point. Mueller could be either a Democrat operative or a Republican hack. If the investigation drones on without any further findings (a la Ken Starr), that might do more to exonerate Trump than anything (plus Republicans can raise funds off it).

What this ultimately does teach us is that both Democrats and Republicans are as swampy and dirty on this as they can get. And the Russians are laughing at us.

TX21 is a congressional race the entire nation will be watching

When two powerhouse representatives of their respective political ideologies clash, there’s always national attention. But as Wendy Davis announces her intention to take on Representative Chip Roy in the 21st Congressional District of Texas, there’s more at stake than just a seat on Capitol Hill. This race represents a battle for the soul of our nation.

If you’re wondering how a single Congressional seat could have so much importance, we have to look at the two candidates. Roy is a freshman who has already been making an impact with is push for fiscal conservatism. His demands on his fellow representatives are simple, all centering around the notion that Republicans must do as they promised. That means securing the border, cutting spending, and other important promises that, thus far, have not been fulfilled.

Davis was a rising star in the Democratic Party before losing a high-profile gubernatorial race. Now, she’s starting her comeback campaign by going after Roy’s congressional seat. Her pro-abortion and big government stances are stark contrasts to Roy’s conservatism, but they have one thing in common. Both are willing to go to the ideological edges even if it means bucking their own party. Roy made news in May when he single-handedly blocked a disaster relief bill, not over he merits of the big spending bill itself but because he does not believe Congress should sit back and let $19 billion get dished out without talking about it on the floor and having a proper vote.

There’s even a movie about Davis that’s potentially in the works, according to Fox News.

Davis became an overnight Democratic sensation in 2013 after her filibuster over an anti-abortion bill. She told Texas Monthly in March that she recently met with actress Sandra Bullock to discuss the Oscar winner portraying her in a movie about the filibuster, which Davis said could be released next year.

Texas was once considered to be a deep-red state, but in recent years has shifted to the point that many strategists on both sides of the aisle consider it a 2020 battleground. Beto O’Rourke confirmed this by coming within 3-points of taking down Senator Ted Cruz. For a hyper-leftist like O’Rourke to even be a consideration in the state is telling of the shift that’s happening there. This is why Davis’s entry into the race is so significant. If Republicans sit back and assume the seat is safe, they could lose it.

If a strong conservative like Chip Roy can hold onto the seat, it bodes well for the nation that Texas is staying true to its values. If Wendy Davis flips it, we can take it as a sign that progressives are making a bigger impact than expected.

Only 35% of Americans oppose ICE raids

Only 36 of Americans oppose ICE raids

Anyone who listens to legacy media outlets or spends enough time on progressive social media sites probably thinks the ICE raids on illegal immigrants with deportation orders are unpopular. “The Squad” rails against them. Progressive pundits scream until they’re nearly in tears. The various echo chambers get hashtags trending about how wrong it is to capture people who have broken the law and been properly adjudicated to be removed from the country.

But a majority of Americans support the raids.

A recent POLITICO/Morning Consult poll shows 51% of Americans support the raids, while only 35% oppose them. This number should be shocking considering all the anti-raid propaganda being pushed by the left, but it’s really not. Americans are generally believers in law and order. They’re aware of the generosity of the nation despite attempts to paint us as callous and to promote the narrative that the President is uncaring.

We are also aware that those targeted by ICE aren’t random people of foreign descent despite the progressive talking points used by nearly every legacy media outlet. They were all given an opportunity to demonstrate that they were fleeing oppression that falls into the context of asylum. But the vast majority – around 90% – never even show up to their hearing to make the case. This is because they’ve been told if they can simply claim asylum and then disappear into the interior, nothing will happen to them.

It’s important for these raids to move forward, increase in frequency, and extend indefinitely until the message is sent to countries with millions of people preparing to take the dangerous journey to our southern border. The message must be made clear: If they do not want to go through the legal process to enter and stay in the country, they will be sent back. With that message delivered, much fewer will attempt it.

The greatest asset conservatives have is the truth. We must not allow Democrats and their media allies to convince us their lies are true. Americans are aware of the problem at the southern border. We must keep the pressure up.

Caught in her lies, Erica Thomas chooses to double down against the truth

Caught in her lies Erica Thomas chooses to double down against the truth

The video above reveals several things about Georgia state representative Erica Thomas and the man who called her a “lazy bitch,” Eric Sparkes. It reveals Sparkes made a very poor choice in confronting a 9-months pregnant woman over her use of the express lane, but more importantly it reveals the lies compounding previous lies by a Democratic politician who wanted to attract national attention through her falsified use of the victim card.

According to Thomas, she was verbally assaulted by a racist “white man” who invoked the phrase “go back where you came from,” echoing a variation of the phrase President Trump used on Twitter a week ago in reference to “The Squad” of first term Democratic Congresswomen. The implications were obvious – whoever it was that said vile things to Thomas was a bigoted Caucasian and almost certainly a Trump supporter. The only thing that could spoil the string of lies and block her path to the progressive-adored status of victimhood was if the man who berated her came forward.

That man was Eric Sparkes, and come forward he did. As a result, Thomas’s narrative broke down quickly. First, he admitted to calling her a “lazy _____” but vehemently denied telling her to go back where she came from. He was so offended by her claims because she called him a racist who echoed President Trump’s message. That didn’t sit well with Sparkes, a man of Cuban descent and a Trump-hating Democrat.

Thomas’s narrative, echoed by thousands of progressives and several Democratic lawmakers, turned out to be completely false. Instead of the vision of a white supremacist Trump-supporter attacking an African-American woman over race, we have an unhinged Democrat calling a 9-month pregnant woman a “lazy _____” for having too many items in the express lane.

One might think this is the point when Thomas accepts an apology and lets the incident fade away. But… no. She’s doubling down, changing her story slightly and ignoring the likelihood that the man who insulted her voted for her.

The worst part is that even after acknowledging Sparkes didn’t say anything racist to her, she’s still claiming racism. Calling someone a “lazy _____” is not a racist attack. It’s callous and pathetic to use the phrase against a 9-month pregnant woman over the use of the express lane at a grocery store, but it’s not racist just because the victim was African-American.

Democrats and legacy media continue to push the hoax about the white supremacist Trump-supporter described by Erica Thomas. But the guy who called her names is a Trump-hating Democrat. The self-loathing of the left hits ludicrous speed sometimes.
