I shouldn’t have to write this article. I shouldn’t have to point out words to live by that were taught to us in Kindergarten. I shouldn’t have to remind conservatives not to judge a book by its cover. But if I’m being honest, I know that our side is just as guilty of this: The knee-jerk reaction to paint groups of people with a broad brush.
When an act of racism occurs, the left is quick to pounce on the issue as proof that all members of that group are racist. Cops, southerners, Republicans, religious, you name it.
Or how about white privilege? Those on the Left who say that all white people are privileged are also caught up in lumping people together.
But the right isn’t without fault. How many of us, when we heard the story of the transgendered man raping a 10 year old girl in the bathroom, immediately beat our chest and said, “See, we were right! This is exactly what we said would happen!”
They called us transphobic bigots, and told us this would never happen
Liberals assured us that transgender bathroom access was a civil rights issue. They told us that this small (less than 1 percent by most estimates) population suffers grievous bullying and psychological harm by having to use the men’s room. They told us that our little girls would be safe from predators, because transgenders are not…
Why do we do this?
It’s common for both sides of the aisle to hear of a dreadful event and immediately start searching for the perpetrator’s affiliations. Why? What are we seeking? Justification that our side is the right one… this time?
It wasn’t a group of people who did it. It was an individual. He or she is responsible. That’s it. This mentality should filter into our everyday lives too. We should be evaluating every person we meet individually, all day, every day. We should be giving them the benefit of the doubt, always. That’s the Golden Rule. Treat them the way you would want them to treat you… with the same love and kindness we talk about on Sundays.
The takeaway
So let’s look at this as an exercise in compassion. I’m challenging you to police yourself on this. If you are guilty of knee jerk reactions like, “See, mass killers are leftists”, learn to catch yourself. If you’re on the left and you hear yourself saying that cops are racist, you aren’t living the Golden Rule. We can do better, America. This isn’t that complex. We just need a little more compassion, acceptance, benefit of the doubt, forgiveness, and of course, love… Individually.
Because if it’s about the individual, then the solution is for each of us to individually make the change.
