The first charges have been filed in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian influence in the 2016 election. Those charges were sealed by a federal judge and, according to CNN, could yield arrests as soon as Monday.
A federal grand jury in Washington DC approved the charges following approval by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.
The investigation into how Russia influenced the election has been ongoing for several months. At the center of the investigation are two men who worked for Donald Trump: Paul Manafort, the former campaign manager for the Trump campaign, and former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. Speculation surrounds these two men with RedState reporting that Manafort seems to be the most likely to have been charged based upon reporting by CNN.
CNN on Mueller Indictment: We Have a Sense of Who the Charges Are Against
There are plenty of theories going around, and Brown was discussing an unspecified “raid”, which might lead one to think of Paul Manafort. But no names so far.
The big question is how long will everyone have to sit on this info, or wait for it, before it’s finally leaked? Will it be leaked Sunday? Tomorrow? In the next ten minutes?
Regardless of who is charged, the timing is ironic. It was revealed just this week that the FBI, DNC, and Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign funded the Steele Dossier, which used Russian sources to deliver opposition research about Trump.
The political world will be watching closely to see who gets arrested. Will it be Manafort? Flynn? Someone else? We’ll probably know by Monday.
