The Senate passed a budget last night without Rand Paul or any Democrats, 51-49. Despite the Senator’s opposition to the budget, he intends to fully support the tax cut plan being worked on by Republicans on Capitol Hill.
I’m all in for tax cuts @realDonaldTrump. The biggest, boldest cuts possible – and soon!
— Senator Rand Paul (@RandPaul) October 20, 2017
Paul’s opposition to the budget stemmed from an increase in military spending which betrayed previously enacted federal budget spending caps. He lashed out at his cohorts earlier in the day by pointing out they weren’t doing what Republicans are allegedly supposed to do: cut spending.
Nearly all Republican Senators just failed a litmus test on cutting spending.

Of the conservatives in the Senate, Paul has been the biggest renegade. His support for tax cuts will take pressure off of Senate leadership as they attempt to enact the biggest tax cuts in decades, perhaps ever.
This would be the first major legislative victory since President Trump took office in January. To do it, he can only afford two nays from Republicans in the Senate as the Democrats seemed poised to remain in lockstep opposition. As for the House, early support from House Freedom Caucus leader Mark Meadows means there should be no problem passing the cuts. As long as they can stay under the 25% cap for corporate tax that the Freedom Caucus has embraced, they should pose no problems for Speaker of the House Paul Ryan. The President’s recommendations called for 20% corporate tax, though they will most likely end up at 22%-24% if the bill reaches his desk. The current corporate rate approaches 39%.
