Never before has Hollywood decided to acknowledge the elephant in the room that sexual assault, pedophilia and the “casting couch” have become over nearly a century of movie-making and moguls. But now that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has taken the step of expelling Harvey Weinstein, they will have to deal with their dark history of pigs and predators.
The New York Times understated the problem by orders of magnitude: “Now, the academy may be forced to contend with other problem members.”
You think?
Harvey Weinstein Ousted From Motion Picture Academy | New York Times
Now, the academy may be forced to contend with other problem members. Scott Feinberg, the longtime awards columnist for The Hollywood Reporter, said, âThis may well be the beginning of a very tough chapter for the academy. Before Mr. Weinstein â who built two studios on the back of the Academy Awards, securing more than 300 nominations for his movies â only one person was known to have been permanently expelled from the academy.
Analysis
The 54-member AMPAS board is made up of a bigger mix of women than ever before. From CEO Dawn Hudson, to vice presidents Lois Burwell, Kathleen Kennedy (Disney’s Lucasfilm president) and Nancy Utley (Fox Searchlight), no longer will the clubby men’s group get to shield itself. Only precedent was stopping the dam from breaking, and now it has broken.
What will the Academy do with such lowlifes as Bill Cosby and Roman Polanski now? Not to mention the entire culture of hush-hushing the worst in human experience; those who overpower, humiliate, and sexually abuse the young and aspiring actors of both sexes–how will Hollywood justify their complicity in the past?
I think they’ll start by genuflecting and apologizing. But that won’t cut it. The Left always eats its own, and only the full Ouroboros treatment will be acceptable in the end. The “rape culture” we’ve seen on campuses will pale in comparison to the hair-trigger courts that will be convened on movie sets and backlots. One accusation will be all it takes to bring down the guys’ club. I would imagine that more than one marriage will be destroyed in the process.

Movie Academy Votes To Expel Harvey Weinstein | Deadline
We do so not simply to separate ourselves from someone who does not merit the respect of his colleagues but also to send a message that the era of willful ignorance and shameful complicity in sexually predatory behavior and workplace harassment in our industry is over. The Board continues to work to establish ethical standards of conduct that all Academy members will be expected to exemplify. AMPAS made no comment on speculation that Weinstein’s Oscars would somehow be rescinded.
Motion Picture Academy Expels Harvey Weinstein
The decision was made by the Academy Board of Governors, which held a special meeting on Saturday morning to consider the disgraced mogul’s future in the organization. The vote to expel Weinstein was “well in excess” of the required two-thirds majority from the 54-member board, according to an Academy statement. Actor Carmine Caridi was expelled from the organization in 2004 for screener piracy, and other members have been kicked out for selling their Oscar tickets.

There's no one-step solution. Many acts–personal and collective, big and small–will point the way. This is one. AMPAS expelled Weinstein. pic.twitter.com/ehbWKNCbEe

Q: If the AMPAS & ATAS removed all "casting couch" offenders, how many would be left?

Final Thoughts
Do you think they’ll take away Weinstein’s Oscars? I don’t think it will happen, just like the NFL doesn’t remove O.J. Simpson’s MVP honors (he never won a Super Bowl) or MLB doesn’t scrub Pete Rose from the record books, the Oscars will remain in the hands of pigs and predators.
But AMPAS will be hard pressed to defend past and future offenders, and quick to expel them. The Oscars have been declining anyway, so possibly nobody will miss the awards show. That’s not the problem Hollywood will suffer. The big problem will be the box office boost of having that laurel displayed on movie posters. Certain actors, producers and studio heads will find themselves locked out–meaning Quentin Tarantino and Michael Moore, and others–due to the Weinstein fallout.
Imagine that fallout times 20 or 50.
This could very well be the death of Hollywood, and none too soon. Georgia already boasts more movies than California. The quicker the liberal moguls and political dilettantes self-consume, the better off America will be.
