I have a confession to make. When I heard the story of the school librarian who rejected the gift of books from First Lady Melania Trump, I intended to read her open letter so I could defend her actions. I should have known better than to try to defend a far-left tool of indoctrination, but I originally misunderstood.
After reading her post, I realized I was wrong to even consider defending Liz Phipps Soeiro.
My initial perspective came from a quick scan of the “facts”:
- Super-successful school with 9,000 books was picked by Melania Trump
- Librarian sent them back because there were other schools that could use the books
- She sprinkled in some politics into her letter
That’s how I understood the story based upon my scan of a mainstream media article. My only defense for her, had these actually been the facts, would have been that lost in all the controversy is the question of why more books were being given to schools that have plenty of books already?
All three points were proven to be incorrect. Here’s reality:
- A program not created by the First Lady selected schools to honor for a day created by… wait for it… the Obama administration
- Librarian sent them back because she wanted to make several political statements
- She sprinkled a couple of alternative facts about education into a purely political letter intended to make herself feel good and receive kudos from other liberals
She went after Betsy DeVos in a way that would make you think the education system was wonderful until 9 months ago. She complained about teacher pay even while admitting they were paid well… just not enough to live close to the rich school. She invoked ‘white supremacy’ as an argument. No, really.

Classless Librarian With Overinflated Ego Rejects Melania’s Gift of Books to Schoolchildren
Unfortunately for Cambridgeport, they have an ungrateful librarian by the name of Liz Phipps Soeiro, who took it upon herself to reject the First Lady’s gift, then made things worse by writing a blog post in which she presumes to educate Mrs. Trump on public schools, with the obligatory leftist screed on Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, whilst also patting herself on the back for being so well educated.
Final Thoughts
Moral of the story: even if it seems like a leftist may be on the proper side of an argument, you should do your full research. I always do, and I’m glad that I did before sticking my foot in my mouth on this one. The First Lady did nothing wrong and deserved zero animosity from this librarian in her publicity stunt. My only question after reading her letter is to wonder what they teach librarians in college. She had two grammatical mistakes in her letter, including an atrocious run-on sentence. My eyes still hurt from reading it.
