First and foremost, I’m a Christian. Nothing is more important to me than my faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. It is the core of who I am.
At the same time, I have a passion for politics. I endeavor to know what political solutions are best for every circumstance. When I find solutions I believe are the best, I do so under a biblical worldview. I can’t help it. As a Christian, my belief of what is right and wrong is formed by my biblical worldview. I can’t divorce myself from my biblical worldview.
So do I believe that Christians should be involved in politics? Yes, I think it is important for Christians to know what is going on and vote based on their conscience and convictions. Make an informed decision and realize no matter what happens, God is sovereign, and He will ultimately work out His plan.
What I don’t think Christians should do is speak for God when He hasn’t spoken; like megachurch Pastor Robert Jeffress. In a recent statement, he stated:
“When it comes to how we should deal with evil doers, the Bible, in the book of Romans, is very clear: God has endowed rulers full power to use whatever means necessary — including war — to stop evil. In the case of North Korea, God has given Trump authority to take out Kim Jong-Un. I’m heartened to see that our president — contrary to what we’ve seen with past administrations who have taken, at best, a sheepish stance toward dictators and oppressors — will not tolerate any threat against the American people. When President Trump draws a red line, he will not erase it, move it, or back away from it. Thank God for a President who is serious about protecting our country.”
This form of political Christianity may be political, but it is not Christianity.
Yes, under Romans 13 and in the Old Testament the government has the power of the sword. The power of the sword isn’t an exclusive power reserved for the United States. The power granted to President Trump is the same power God has given to Kim Jong-Un. Think about that.
Also, the other issue I have with this statement is, that somehow the United States is righteous. Don’t get me wrong. I love this country. I’m an American. I believe America is the greatest country in the world. I love this country so much that I don’t like to be called a Greek-American because we know what ever comes after the hyphen is always diluted. I’m an American, and I happen to be of Greek descent. I believe in American Exceptionalism.
So don’t get me wrong. This isn’t me bashing America. It’s just me pointing out the biblical fact that all nations have abandoned God including the United States.
Therefore, this leads me to my third point. The truth is North Korea is probably the most wicked and evil country in existence. Does this mean that God is angrier with them? I don’t know. You know, what I do know, and what the Bible tells us, that God used the Assyrians to bring judgment upon Israel. The Assyrians were even more wicked and evil than Israel; though God used them because you know what God hates even more. He hates hypocrites.
Israel had the Scriptures and ignored them. They invoked themselves as righteous and above all nations because God had set them apart. We are God’s chosen people; we are superior. They invoked His name and did what was evil in the sight of the Lord.
That is why Jesus continually called the Pharisees hypocrites and blasted them as illustrated in Matthew 15. Jesus called them the blind leading the blind and both would fall into a pit. The Pharisees rejected Jesus because they believed they didn’t need him. We are children of Abraham. We obey the Law. We know God, and we speak for Him. Jesus continually rebuked them throughout his ministry because they neither knew him or his Father. They were first-class hypocrites that invoked the name of God for their own lustful and selfish ambitions.
You see, this is what political Christianity tries to do in this country all the time. They are like every politician, which always end speeches with, May God Bless America.
Let me tell you something. Most of the time this is an excellent example of taking the Lord’s name in vain. Nowadays, we don’t keep the “May” in there we just go to the demand of God Bless us.
You want God to bless us and at the same time completely disregard His Word? What kind of God do you think He is? He is not the false idol most American churches worship. The God of love and no holiness, righteousness, and worthy to judge. Live in your sin, that’s cool. I’m only in it for the blessing, don’t talk to me about dying to self and all that.
I don’t know Pastor Robert Jeffress. I have never met him. Don’t know much about his theology or ministry or even if he is truly a Christian. What I do know is that God isn’t an American. He isn’t a Republican, and He didn’t vote for Donald Trump.
Pastor, if you are called to the ministry, then preach the gospel and make disciples of all nations. Fulfill the Great Commission and get off the airwaves. You want to proclaim what God has spoken. Then open your Bible and preach the only place He has spoken, and that is the Bible.
I don’t know what will transpire between North Korea and the US, but I will be praying for peace and not stoking the fires of war.
One thing I’m certain of is that I am not foolish enough to invoke God’s name and speak when He hasn’t spoken. You know, I’m kind of big on not misrepresenting God and invoking His wrath. Call me crazy but this political Christianity that has been around for decades is what needs to go away and just die.

AMEN!!!! Much wisdom in this, and I am much in agreement!
I find the safest way to seek wisdom about Politics is by going to the Word of God, the Bible. Our Bible is our road map, it teaches about correct responses when it come to love, life, relationship, authority, evil and our enemies. Scripture can be applied to ALL things. Even leading a NATION! God can envoke even a ROCK, OR A donkey if he has to. If you believe that God is sovereign and that He is IN CONTROL, then you have to believe that HE RAISES up whom HE WANTS to be a leader, good or bad. Many examples of that truth all throughout the Bible. God is still on the throne, he knows the end, and there is Nothing New Under the Sun!
Politics will always be part of religion, because it the only way religious teachings on equity, accountability and service to humanity can be fully practiced. What is wrong in political religion is ‘we are the chosen people’syndrome.
Thanks, David. April, I couldn’t have agreed with you more. Thanks for reading my article and supporting The New Americana.
