For real change, make local elections a top priority

Published

on

Can you name the Vice President of the United States? How about the two U.S. Senators in your state? All members of Congress (or at least your own district’s representative)? Governor? If you’re reading this, chances are good that you can easily answer these questions because you’re at least a little interested in politics.

How about your Mayor? Any or all city council members? School board members? County Auditor? Unfortunately, this is where many Americans start to fail the test. Admittedly, I would have failed the test a couple of years ago. Like many Americans, I voted for local elections based upon name recognition, party affiliation, or whether or not I’d received a flyer or received a knock on my door. I spoke to a woman the other day who said she voted for whoever had a sign in her next-door neighbor’s yard because “that lady keeps up with this stuff.”

Every American should keep up with this stuff. It’s THAT important.

When I started flirting with the idea of leaving the GOP last year, I explored several third parties. I sat on conference calls with leaders of one party, had an audience with the chair of another, and spoke directly to three third-party Presidential candidates. Invariably, the discussions were discouraging. It wasn’t that they didn’t have good ideas. It was that only one party could answer an important question: “What are you guys doing to win local elections?”

They were all sinking time, money, and energy into getting their Presidential candidate on ballots, but only one party was actively running in local elections. They made it clear that they weren’t actually giving much support to local candidates, but at least a few people were willing to use their party’s name a registration to run for office. I tracked back to see how many elections they’d won over the years. 13, including two in 2016. How could a party that was sinking all of their resources into a futile Presidential race think it was okay to put next to zero effort into local elections?

This is why I helped form the Federalist Party.

Local elections ARE important. They don’t get the press coverage. The people who win these offices can’t bomb Syria or impose tariffs on Canada. On the other hand, they make decisions that directly affect our lives. They choose the way many of our children receive their education. They set guidelines to either encourage or discourage business growth. Some bring communities together. Others divide communities further apart. It’s imperative that we all start paying closer attention to the races and leaders that live next door. That’s not to say the people in DC are not important, but they receive too much emphasis compared to the politicians in our own backyards.

As a party, we intend to focus on local elections from two perspectives. First, we want to identify principled candidates and win local races. Then, we want to localize decision-making as much as possible for the nation. There is currently way too much influence coming from DC in areas they’re simply not qualified or empowered to addressed.

There are areas in which the federal government should hold the power. These have been clearly enumerated. It’s time to return the rest of the power of government where it belongs: states, counties, cities, communities, and most importantly to individual Americans.

Coca-Cola Ford and Xerox tell Planned Parenthood to remove their names from donor list

Supporting Planned Parenthood has been a badge of honor for many companies over the years, but recent revelations about selling murdered preborn baby parts and other bad press have made the abortion giant no longer a good association for many American companies. Notable large corporations including Coca-Cola, Ford, and Xerox have asked Planned Parenthood to remove their names from their published list of donors.

Planned Parenthood responded by removing the list of 41 corporations altogether.

But it isn’t just embarrassment that prompted the desire for removal. As it turns out, many of the companies on the list stopped donating to Planned Parenthood long ago.

“We checked our files for the last 20 years and have no record of Xerox Corp. contributing to Planned Parenthood,” a representative from Xerox told The Daily Signal.

Opinion

As I’ve said many times, fighting abortion cannot be one-sided. We can’t just focus on the political side of the battle and expect to win if we don’t first win the cultural battle. By highlighting the hideous activities of abortion providers like Planned Parenthood, we weaken their ability to spread their heinous message of death.

This is a huge win that won’t get much coverage. The left doesn’t want anyone to know there’s a large amount of disgust being sent towards Planned Parenthood and not just from ardent pro-life activists. The American people are finally becoming enlightened about the reality of life at conception, the pain felt by preborn babies, and the awful tactics used by Planned Parenthood and their allies.

We need to keep up the pressure. We have truth on our side.

Quote

“Republicans are trying to ban women who receive Medicaid from getting care at Planned Parenthood. I’m sick & tired of these relentless attacks on Americans’ access to health care. My colleagues & I have joined a legal brief to support women’s access to Planned Parenthood.” – Kamala Harris

Final Thoughts

It’s telling that companies who were once proud to be supporters of Planned Parenthood are now hiding their contributions. This is a victory for the cultural side of the battle against abortion.

Sign the petition demanding an investigation of the investigators

Now that Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian hacking of the 2016 election has been completed and the investigation’s report has been released, we have more questions than we have answers.

Why was it started in the first place? It seems circular reasoning and opposition research were the only pieces of “evidence” used to justify extensive spying on the Trump campaign and the subsequent investigation. This does not clear the threshold of viable suspicion necessary for FISA warrants and clearly was not an appropriate starting point upon which to launch an investigation.

Why was it allowed to continue for so long? The report indicates early on, the investigation saw it was extremely unlikely they would find evidence that the Trump campaign colluded with the Russians. Moreover, the report demonstrates the Russians were acting of their own accord to “hack” the elections, but were unsuccessful in generating enough manipulative propaganda to sway a significant chunk of voters.

Were political motivations at play? At this point, the answer seems obvious. From President Obama’s administration to Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign to left-leaning elements within the FBI itself, it’s conspicuous that attempts to not only manufacture wrongdoing by candidate Trump but also to hide wrongdoing by candidate Clinton were in full effect.

Two years and $30 million in taxpayer dollars should have yielded answers. It did not. The reason isn’t that there were no answers to be found. It’s that they were looking in the wrong places. It’s time to look in the right places. Sign this petition.

Illegal alien continued assaulting border patrol agent even as they tumbled down a hill

Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents arrested a 37-year-old Ecuadorian national after he assaulted an agent atop a mountain south of Tucson Wednesday evening. The man continued punching and kicking the agent even as they slid down the hillside.

He was subdued only after additional agents came to restrain him.

Two Mexican nationals traveling with him were also arrested during the incident.

Opinion

We’ve all seen the sad images and videos on mainstream media of helpless mothers with three children trying desperately to get to the United States where they will certainly become productive and patriotic members of society. That’s the image the left wants embedded in our brains, but it’s not the reality at the border.

Yes, there are large groups of migrants coming over nonstop with hopes of taking their piece of the taxpayer-funded pie. But there are also criminals coming over who will do anything, including harm or kill border patrol agents, if that’s what it takes for them to stake their claim to what they want from America and Americans.

There are dangers at the border that rarely get reported. These brave border patrol agents need a wall, more men, better technology, and more facilities to house those coming over. They need these things now, but Democrats continue to demand they try to secure our borders with both hands tied behind their backs. If one were conspiracy-minded, one might think the Democrats are doing it on purpose so more illegal immigrants will come into our country.

Hmm.

“Assaults highlight safety concerns for agents who often encounter and arrest multiple subjects in remote and isolated locations in rugged terrain.” – CBP Statement

Final Thoughts

The image of helpless migrants carrying little babies and peacefully surrendering to border patrol is only part of the picture. Border patrol agents are put in harms way daily, yet Democrats will not give them the resources they need.
