Two things were certain to happen after the State of the Union address. All of President Trump’s most avid supporters were going to love it no matter what he said and all of his most ardent detractors were going to hate it. Neither group was important for this speech and they weren’t the intended audience. The President hoped to reach the majority of Americans who aren’t passionate in either direction, and judging by initially polling results, he accomplished just that.

Now, it’s time for media and politicians on both sides of the aisle to attempt to sway these people in the middle towards their side of the arguments. At stake is the general sentiment that will either allow or disallow the President’s agenda from moving forward with support or contention.
The border wall will be one of those issues, but the President spent much less time that I had anticipated selling it’s merits. This could be construed in one of two ways: either he believes a deal is going to be reached in Congress (unlikely) or he has already resolved to take action with a national emergency declaration or even 10 U.S.C. 284. Either way, many will still talk about it since it’s the pressing issue of the day.
Another item that will be highlighted by both sides was the President’s request of Congress to act towards prohibiting late-term abortions. It’s a good time for this discussion following controversies in New York and Virginia on the issue. The President invoked Ralph Northam, the embattled governor of Virginia, in his speech just prior to his request to Congress.
Depending on which news channel you watch, the anchors and commentators will paint the President’s speech as either great or awful. But it’s the opinions on social media and smaller news outlets that will eventually sway the approval numbers up or down. To us, this was a great speech, arguably his best ever, though some disagree. Either way, it couldn’t have come at a better time.
Lara Logan’s message about the media must not go unheard
It’s unfortunate that most Americans still have no idea who Lara Logan is. She is brave. She is usually accurate. She isn’t impressed by the leftist rhetoric in the journalistic echo chamber in which she’s operated most of her adult life. All three of these things makes her an enigma in the world of mainstream media.
Her message yesterday during the Mike Drop Podcast was one the world needs to hear. Whether you want to listen to three and a half hours of curse-laden podcasting or if you just want to know the gist is up to you, but don’t dismiss the message outright. This is too important.
What Logan said is what a good number of conservative Americans have known for a long time: mainstream media leans very much to the left. They’ve been left-leaning for at least three decades, but today’s variation of “objective truth” is far from objective and rarely the truth. As Logan noted, the newsrooms of America’s journalistic outlets are not made up of the unbiased truth-tellers they’d like us to believe they are. Instead, they’re made up of political activists with the vast majority of them (85% according to Logan) leaning to the left.
As some are aware, their lean has turned into a full-blown lurch to the left during the Trump era.
What does this mean for journalism? Does it mean we need more unbiased reporting? This is a question we’ve asked many times at NOQ Report. Since the vast majority of our writers are conservatives, it would make sense to continue to be a right-leaning publication. But some have suggested that America needs more unbiased reporting, and we’re definitely capable of doing that. But here’s the thing. If we and others go down the unbiased road while most of mainstream media remains bound to the left, are we really making a difference? The answer that we invariably come to is, “No.”
The only way to truly fight the bias is to maintain a sense of honesty about our perspectives. That means we are biased to both the conservative philosophy and the truth itself. Unlike leftist media, intellectually honest conservative media has the advantage of being both truthful and righteous simultaneously. This is why we can call out President Trump or the Republican Party when it’s appropriate. We are beholden to an ideology, not a political party, and therefore we do not have to hide the truth just because it isn’t convenient come election time.
Support independent conservative journalism.
As I’ve done many times in the past, I have no problem with calling out anyone in any party when their actions are in opposition to the limited-government, federalism-minded, conservatively balanced philosophies we espouse. When President Trump had acting AG Matthew Whitaker sign the bump stock ban, we weren’t sitting back running cover for the President. We called out him, his administration, and every politician that supported this obtuse affront on the 2nd Amendment.
Lara Logan may or may not be calling out the media for their bias out of a sense or duty. There’s no way to know her heart. But her words were truthful and there seems to be nothing for her to gain from them. This message is one that deserves attention.
Covington Catholic student Nick Sandmann sues WaPo for a quarter of a billion dollars
The “MAGA Kids” may end up getting their day in court after all. Since Covington Catholic School students were falsely accused by many in mainstream media of attacking a Native American activist at the March for Life rally in Washington DC, many have speculated they would be preparing a lawsuit. The family of Nick Sandmann, who was at the center of the controversy, retained an attorney last month.
Now, it seems the attorneys have been working overtime.

This is going to open up another round of attacks against Sandmann and the “MAGA Kids” because of the size of the lawsuit and the targets. Going after the media is always hard (as it should be) and demonstrating harm to the tune of a quarter billion dollars is going to be even harder. Nevertheless, this was the next natural step after the torment they went through following the incident.
Before anyone calls him weak for using the broken system to try to score a paycheck, we must remember these events are going to harm him well into his adult life. Even today, after all of the allegations against him have been thoroughly debunked, he’s still regarded negatively by many leftists simply because he had the nerve to wear a MAGA hat.
Is his suffering worth $250 million? That’s for others to decide. But the damage the media and leftist politicians did to these kids is definitely worth something. Hopefully, they’ll be able to rebuild their lives with whatever they’re awarded.
The top 5 headlines of leftist media deception this week
A sampling of how the national socialist media deceives the public with one line editorials.
One unfortunate result of many getting their news via social media headlines or cable news show chyron is that this ends up being the critical part of the story. Its wording and structure is of paramount importance for those who only view the world through one line of text. Even those who read just the headline and the first few words can be misleading, hence the term ‘burying the lede’. Colleague Scarlett Madison made this important point in her article on how the NY Times shows how to be biased even when technically telling the truth.
This is just a sampling of the past few days with some of the more absurd examples. No doubt, the socialist media will conjure up even more in their quest to propagandise the public.
While not political per se, this example from a few weeks ago merits special attention. The future museum of clickbait will most likely feature this one as the pinnacle of the art. Given the structure of the headline, the impression is that a ‘Daring’ flight attendant took a walk on the wing of an airliner at flight level 320 and 460 knots without any safety gear. When it was really on a Stearman at low altitude and 44 kts harnessed to the plane at all times, a daring stunt to be sure but not the one implied by the headline. Although one had to click-through the headline to find that out, which is exactly the point.
Raising a question without raising a question
Some headlines are a lesson of subliminal propaganda, with a one-line editorial meant to convey a certain idea that is never alluded to in the piece. In the case of an Associated Press story on the Aurora mass murder, at one point the headline read as follows:
With the usual trope that existing restrictions on Liberty are never good enough, holding out the impossibility of one more tweak solving all problems, in this case throwing in the idea of so-called ‘Red Flags’ as being some sort of solution. The propaganda being that ‘questions’ really mean faults in the law necessitating even more limitations on Liberty – for our own good, of course.
On the same topic, we have a headline on the same story that puts the subliminal advertising industry to shame
Most people having a modicum of logic will ignore the overt implications of the phrase ‘gun rampage’, but it does plant the subliminal seed that it wasn’t the person who caused this mass murder to take place, but instead it was a gun that when on a ‘rampage’.
This is part of the mistake we make in using terms such as gun control or anti-gun. It focuses attention on an inanimate object [An object many fear] instead of the truth of the loss of Liberty.
Two headlines deflecting attention and attempting damage control of the Left’s ‘Green New Deal’
Here the close proximity of the GOP with the Green New Deal conveys the subtle implication that it belongs to them with the bonus that it will redound positively for the nation’s socialist Left. Following in the fine tradition of nation’s Left projecting their maladies on the Pro-Liberty Right.
“Unwilling”? The now-retracted FAQ made other eyebrow-raising claims, but conservatives pounced on that word in particular. Of a piece with the usual complaints about welfare as a reward for laziness, it was called extreme, absurd and, in one florid instance, a “Communist Manifesto, 21st Century.”
Once again, we see the use of one of the Left’s favourite words whenever the Right points out the facts of a situation.
Finally, there is this little gem from the Birdcage liner of record
Leftist media sources must have a lexicon of selected words designed to elicit a certain reaction. The term ‘Pounce’ is one of their favourites. Commonly used whenever the Socialist-Left makes colossal mistake and we of the Pro-Liberty Media merely reports on what happened. No doubt this will be seen in the stories on the Jussie Smollett situation.
Demonise is another Leftist favourite that roughly translates to having them dead to rights in describing them. Like the over-used ‘pounce’ they tend to keep those little gems in describing those of us trying to conserve Liberty. The underlying pretense with the ‘D’ word is that it’s not precisely true. In this case with the subtle implication that even though the Left has embraced socialism as tightly as Al Gore hugging a polar bear they aren’t truly socialist. Never mind that most of the mob of presidential candidates signed on to the ‘Green New Deal’ before reading the fine print penned by Mao Zedong. Or that they’ve kept their distance from bills that would preserve the life of a baby after it’s born. Curiously enough, they also like to keep the Left’s obsession with gun confiscation out of the mix.
The purpose of these one line editorials in the guise of a headline is not to inform, but imply certain ideas without being overt about it. These were just a few from a couple of days, consider the effect of a constant stream of them for year upon year.
This is why we have to be careful in how we counteract these deceptions in a single line, and why Conservative media sources are vital to the survival of Liberty.
