Two things were certain to happen after the State of the Union address. All of President Trump’s most avid supporters were going to love it no matter what he said and all of his most ardent detractors were going to hate it. Neither group was important for this speech and they weren’t the intended audience. The President hoped to reach the majority of Americans who aren’t passionate in either direction, and judging by initially polling results, he accomplished just that.

Now, it’s time for media and politicians on both sides of the aisle to attempt to sway these people in the middle towards their side of the arguments. At stake is the general sentiment that will either allow or disallow the President’s agenda from moving forward with support or contention.
The border wall will be one of those issues, but the President spent much less time that I had anticipated selling it’s merits. This could be construed in one of two ways: either he believes a deal is going to be reached in Congress (unlikely) or he has already resolved to take action with a national emergency declaration or even 10 U.S.C. 284. Either way, many will still talk about it since it’s the pressing issue of the day.
Another item that will be highlighted by both sides was the President’s request of Congress to act towards prohibiting late-term abortions. It’s a good time for this discussion following controversies in New York and Virginia on the issue. The President invoked Ralph Northam, the embattled governor of Virginia, in his speech just prior to his request to Congress.
Depending on which news channel you watch, the anchors and commentators will paint the President’s speech as either great or awful. But it’s the opinions on social media and smaller news outlets that will eventually sway the approval numbers up or down. To us, this was a great speech, arguably his best ever, though some disagree. Either way, it couldn’t have come at a better time.
