I remember the last trailer I saw that made me think, “That looks dumb, but it might just be amazing.” That movie was the first Iron Man. I thought it could go either way, and it went all the way to the top as my third favorite superhero movie of all time. The top two should be obvious.
The same feeling comes over me when I watched the trailer for The Umbrella Academy on Netflix. It’s an interesting premise based on the comic book series of the same name. The actors seem adequate. But there’s something about it that makes me think it might be a stinker.
It seems a bit like Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Kick-Ass. I’m actually fans of both, but the combination may not actually work. One thing I will say about the trailer is that it’s very well made. It gives the premise, establishes the scope of the challenges, but shrouds the characters mostly in mystery about what they can do. That part’s great.
But the feeling I get from it is worrisome. It’s hard to put into words.
When the teaser came out last month, I was excited. Now that we see more in the trailer, I’m less enthused. But hey, I could be totally wrong. That’s happened before. Hopefully it will be a winner when it’s released February 15.
