Politics are often governed by knee-jerk reactions that end up sticking. Americans are stubborn. When we take a stance on something it’s often hard to reverse it. Such is the case with reactions to Robert Muller’s investigation, and more specifically what the White House should do about it.
The left is unhinged over their demands for protections of Mueller. They are pushing for unconstitutional restrictions on the President’s ability to fire or curtail his investigation. This seems logical; they want the President to be caught colluding with Russia in the 2016 election. But here’s the thing. If their goal is to get rid of President Trump, the easiest way to do it is to allow his administration to fire Mueller. If that happens, he will be convicted in the eyes of public opinions.
Many conservatives who believe the President is innocent have declared they’d pull their support if he were to fire Mueller. The general public would view such a move by the President as proof he has something to hide. He may avoid actions from the DOJ by doing so, but he probably wouldn’t even be allowed to run unchallenged for the GOP nomination in such a scenario.
On the other side of the fence are the Trump supporters who are echoing the President’s many statements that the Mueller investigation is a witch hunt. They cheered when Matthew Whitaker was appointed interim Attorney General and start making demands that Whitaker fire Mueller.
Based on the results of such a move detailed above, it’s ludicrous for his supporters to think this. It would be political suicide for the President to fire Mueller. The President is very aware of this, which means firing Mueller would be a last resort. In other words, the only reason the President would fire Mueller is if he really has something to hide.
The Mueller investigation should proceed unimpeded. Whitaker and the President should keep their hands completely off. Any meddling at this point would heighten the sense that there’s a cover up.
Democrats should hope Mueller gets fired. Republicans should hope the Mueller investigation reaches its conclusion. It’s funny that logic doesn’t seem to be working on either side of the aisle.
