I remember when John Kelly was first announced as Chief of Staff. It wasn’t the man himself who interested me. The reactions from DC insiders caught my attention. Everybody liked him. Those on the right said he was a solid choice to rein in dissenters and find the “moles” who were leaking White House gossip on a daily basis. Those on the left said he was a solid choice to rein in President Trump. Some even suggested he might be able to get Twitter uninstalled on his phone.
Universal adoration from both sides of the fence does one thing for me: raises alarm bells. A chief of staff who isn’t polarizing is a chief of staff that can’t be effective in a Trump Presidency. That was my initial assessment and if the latest gossip is true, my assessment will be confirmed.
Rumors are spreading that clashes with First Lady Melania Trump, National Security Adviser John Bolton, and the President himself have Kelly working his way out the door. I’m okay with this. He didn’t rein in, well, anything. He likely said what Bob Woodward quoted him as saying about the President, which to me is a betrayal even if it’s true. Lastly, I’ve always thought he was the originator of the infamous “inside resistance” letter published in the NY Times. I don’t think he was the author, but I think it’s likely he not only had someone write it but told them to make it appear is if Vice President Mike Pence wrote it.
But that’s conspiracy theory. Here’s reality.
If Kelly gets the boot, President Trump should strongly consider talking to Lieutenant Colonel Allen West. I can’t think of anyone better suited for the role than West. He’s a strong conservative who won’t bend for the sake of political expediency. Some may say this is a characteristic one wouldn’t want in the White House, especially with Democratic control of the House, but I beg to differ. For most cabinet positions, a keen sense for political expediency makes sense. For chief of staff, it does not.
West’s career in the Army, politics, and as a commentator give him all the credentials he’d need in order to clean up a White House that’s in a state of transition. Some people have already been removed. Others will be removed in the near future. The President needs a strong leader to make the transitions as smooth as possible while still maintaining the day-to-day affairs of a kinetic White House.
Compared to Reince Priebus and John Kelly, Allen West would be a major step up in both integrity and effectiveness. The President needs to give West serious consideration. The White House and the country need his brand of leadership.
