The West Wing may be where nearly all the action happens, but that doesn’t mean the East Wing of the White House doesn’t get a say. First Lady Melania Trump has called for the removal of deputy national security adviser Mira Ricardel, catching pretty much everyone off guard.
“It is the position of the Office of the First Lady that she [Ricardel] no longer deserves the honor of serving in this White House,” a spokesperson for the First Lady said.
My Take
Michelle Obama definitely influenced President Obama’s policies and held wide sway over the happenings at the White House. In President Reagan’s final year or so in the White House, Nancy Reagan practically ran the show. It is not unprecedented for a First Lady to have power over events and decisions in and out of the White House.
The clash apparently stems from interactions between the First Lady and the deputy national security adviser while on trips together.
She is not an elected official, but she serves in a role at the discretion of the President just as a staffer would. That means only the President can curtail or enhance her powers, act on her decisions, and take or dismiss her advise.
