The extreme leftist narrative being put forth by mainstream media and Democratic candidates for office is arguably scarier than the massive illegal immigration problem we have in America. This is different from past messages of compassion and security that led to DACA. The new narrative is one that fully embraces open borders.
It’s unfortunate that it came to this based on timing. If it weren’t for the first migrant caravan, illegal immigration wouldn’t be much of a topic for the midterms. Democrats wouldn’t be talking about it except as it’s framed within preserving DACA. Republicans would mention the wall at rallies but otherwise wouldn’t be saying much. A little over a month ago, illegal immigration wasn’t a major election issue.
The caravans have changed this and forced both sides to address it. For Republicans, it’s a welcome addition to the conversation because it takes focus away from their inability to repeal, replace, or even fix Obamacare. For Democrats, they’re being forced into a corner that’s causing them to veer left on the topic so their rhetoric matches the loudest fringe portion of their base that believes opposing President Trump requires an equal but opposite reaction.
Both sides are wrong to an extent.
This might be a good thing for Republicans in the short-term as it pertains to midterm elections, but it has dramatically accelerated the shift in mindset for Democrats. One could argue that the timing was perfect for those pushing for open borders because it forced centrist Democrats to see this as a campaign issue. Politicians are easiest to mold ahead of elections as their views rapidly evolve to match the news cycle.
Time for a brief tinfoil hat moment. The forces pushing for open borders that orchestrated these caravans are using proximity to the election to force moderate Democrats into their camp. They care much less about the results of this election than shifting the mindset on immigration among the impressionable progressives who adamantly oppose President Trump. By creating a situation where Democratic candidates and mainstream media are forced to play the proper foil to President Trump’s predictable responses to the migrant caravans, the orchestrators of the caravans gained years worth or propaganda and open borders indoctrination in a couple of months.
Pro-Immigration, anti-illegal-immigration
It’s safe to take your tinfoil hat off, now.
Most of my family members in the United States are immigrants. I am an immigrant myself; my father was in the U.S. Air Force stationed in the Philippines when he met my mother. I came here when I was 8-months-old.
I am one of millions of conservatives who believe legal immigration is a good thing for our country. When good people are willing to go through the immigration process to become permanent residents of our country, they have the best opportunity to contribute. One of my uncles is an immigrant who was in the U.S. Navy. His wife, my aunt, is an immigrant. She’s a nurse. One of their children is also a nurse. The other works for a U.S. military contractor. They love watching football and having barbecues. They hate paying taxes, but they’ve done so since coming here. Legally.
They contribute. They’re the “best people” that President Trump often describes, the legal immigrants who seized the American dream and give back to our nation as a result.
Illegal immigration steals from them. It belittles the legal immigration process. It takes taxpayer dollars that should be spent on Americans but is instead spent to keep them safe, healthy, and educated. That’s if they’re not caught. If they do get caught, the expense to American taxpayers rises.
Being opposed to illegal immigration is not racism. It isn’t heartless. We are a sovereign nation that must rely on our people, whether born here or legally here as immigrants, to participate in making our own lives, families, and communities better. By doing so, we all take part in making our nation better.
Those who circumvent our laws and accept the benefits of American life are stealing from those who contribute to everything it means to be an American. That’s not a racists statement. It’s a statement of fact. I have no problem with my tax dollars being spent helping people in need and there are millions of American citizens and legal immigrants who fall into that category.
Safety and hope for migrants in the caravans
Part of mainstream media’s narrative is that the conditions the migrants are leaving are so terrible that they need to be helped. I agree that their conditions are horrific. In Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador where most of the migrants originated, their prospects are very dim. Many of them are in grave danger. That’s where the narrative makes sense.
It dissolves the moment we realize the vast majority are passing up on an open invitation to be safe, educated, medically treated, sheltered, and given jobs. Mexico wants them to stay. They have offered them the protections those in the migrant caravan claim to seek. Yet, few are accepting the offer.
They would rather walk an extra thousand+ miles and face a likelihood of being turned away for an opportunity to live in America illegally.
“But, they want to do it legally through the asylum system,” a leftist might point out.
This is a lie. It is well known in these countries that 4 out of 5 applying for asylum do not receive it. That’s acceptable to those in the migrant caravan, not because they like long odds but because they’ve been told how the system works. Asylum seekers are held until they apply. Then, they’re released until their court appearance, which often takes years.
During that time, they’re able to secure a foothold in the United States by living here illegally. Most won’t show up to hear the bad news that their application was denied. They won’t have to. By that time they will have established themselves with a life of living in the United States illegally while being protected by progressives.
It doesn’t matter that 70%-80% within the caravans are young, healthy men. The focus from the media is on the pregnant women trying to get to America before their babies are born. It doesn’t matter that crime is already rampant within the caravan itself. As far as the media is concerned, these harmless migrants aren’t bringing any crime across the border. It doesn’t matter if they’re already getting violent and clashing with Mexican authorities. Even showing such videos is labeled as racist by the left.
If you express valid concerns about any of the migrant caravans trying to enter America at any cost, you’re just a racist in the eyes of the fringe left, their Democratic candidate enablers, and their puppets in mainstream media.
There are real concerns and a majority of Americans on the right and left know it. But the far-left is being given the authoritative voice by mainstream media so the open borders narrative can prevail. Any who voice concerns are instantly labeled a racist.

Good article.
You touched very lightly on some of the burdens these people impose through their physical breach of the US Border. By their very presence they require at a minimum food and shelter, these must be provided to minimum US standards, not those that would be the practice in the countries they are coming from.
An even larger threat represented by these people is that they have not been screened for disease. there are many diseases endemic in Central America that have been eliminated in the USA, at great cost and public effort on the part of our forebears. We have little or no way to screen them for the presence or absence of these diseases short of an intensive and expensive panel of medical screenings, plus an equally intensive requirement that they ~all~ be vaccinated, whether they are granted entry to the USA or not.
