News that Gladiator 2 is moving forward with Ridley Scott has called up some speculation about Maximus Decimus Meridius, the lead character who died at the end of the original. The performance won Russell Crowe an Oscar and helped the film win Best Picture.
No, he’s not getting resurrected to reprieve his roll… not really. The scant details we have so far about the movie tell us that Maximus will “greatly influence” the new lead character, Lucius. He appeared as a boy in the first movie, one who inadvertently outed his mother’s deception to the villain, Commodus. This led to the foiling of Maximus’ escape plan and final showdown in the Colosseum.
How Scott plans on letting Maximus “influence” Lucius is unclear. Though the first movie didn’t have a supernatural element, Maximus had visions of his dead wife and child while near death on two occasions.
This film looks like it’s moving forward quickly. Scott has a penchant for reviving long-dormant movies, having directed Alien: Covenant and producing Blade Runner 2049.
‘Gladiator 2’: Ridley Scott’s Oscar Winner Is Getting a Sequel
According to Deadline, production on “Gladiator 2” could “happen very quickly.” Scott is currently gearing up to film his first television series, the TNT drama “Raised by Wolves.” The “Gladiator” sequel is now being viewed as his next feature directorial effort. The original “Gladiator” opened May 5, 2000 and was a critical and box office sensation. The film earned over $400 million worldwide and was nominated for 11 Oscars, winning for Best Picture and Best Actor.
“Gladiator 2” is taking shape at Paramount. The studio has brought on Craig to work on the script. Craig and the studio joined forces for Tom Cruise’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” which is now filming. Craig’s other credits include Ben Affleck’s drama “The Town,” “12 Strong,” and the two-part “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay.”
As Hollywood continues to try to find success by reviving old material, it makes sense to work Crowe back into the story line. Let’s just hope it’s not in the form of “he came back to life after credits rolled.” If so, they should take back both Oscars in protest.
