Not since Ronald Reagan was president have the various factions of the GOP been so unified behind their party as a whole. They got a big scare when it appeared there was a chance their slim majority might not be enough to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. It was sobering, enough to make many of them put their ideological differences on hold until after the midterm elections.
Will the GOP be able to sustain the detente that’s unofficially in place between conservatives and moderates? Trump loyalists and NeverTrumpers? Neocons and rightwingers?
We have nearly five weeks left to know for sure, but one thing is almost certain: If the Democrats continue to act in the terrifyingly unhinged manner they’ve demonstrated since Kavanaugh’s nomination was announced, Republicans will maintain control of the Senate and have a decent chance of keeping the House.
Nothing drives GOP voters like the risk of leftists in power.
For the record, I am a NeverTrumper. I’m probably one of the more moderate variations who happily acknowledges the great things the President has done such as drive tax reform and drastically cut regulations. I still don’t like his tactics, the way he’s converted the party to embrace “fair trade” tariffs, or ethical and moral boundaries he has crossed throughout his life. Nevertheless, I like most of his agenda (where’s the damned wall?) and I passionately want the GOP to remain in power.
For now, I’m on the President’s side 100%. We’ll sort out our differences after the election.
That sentiment seems to be prevailing among Republican voters if polls are to be believed. Many who only vote every four years are finding it important enough to make an exception for this midterm. We’ll need it. The map may favor us in the Senate but the House majority is going to be a huge challenge to keep.
The Democrats are becoming more insane every day. For the next month, every Republican must put their philosophical differences with each other aside and unite to keep Capitol Hill red. If we don’t, the blue wave may drown us all.
