Brett Kavanaugh will be at the Supreme Court on Tuesday. Conniving Democrats, unhinged protesters, and manipulative mainstream have the rest of Columbus Day weekend to plan their next moves. Republicans will be doing the same, but not until after a brief sigh of relief that the dumpster fire has finally been put out.
Once the news cycle resets itself Tuesday or Wednesday, Republicans will have the latter part of next week to set their narrative and hammer home a direction for the party and its voters to follow through the midterm homestretch. It’s imperative they focus on two things and two things only. One is fear. The other is prosperity.
They cannot walk around with a bounce in their step proclaiming a hard fought victory to get Kavanaugh confirmed. That might be the natural reaction and part of the old school playbook, but in these midterms they have to play on fear if they want to get the base moving and Independents shifting to their side. They must hammer home the fact that they won by the skin of their teeth. They must make their voters understand that as many as three Supreme Court Justices may need to be confirmed in the second half of President Trump’s term which means every Senate seat is an absolute must-win.
The other side of the message is hope, and it’s the only way they can possibly maintain control of the House. More Americans are working. Corporations are investing in America and giving back to their employees. Stocks are up. Growth is up. Just about every economic indicator is on the rise. The only way to keep the good times rolling is to keep the GOP in charge of the House of Representatives.
It will be much harder for them to keep control of the House than the Senate. Prosperity or lack thereof is what drives presidential elections, but midterm elections focus much less on the economy for some odd reason. Republicans are faced with an enthusiastic Democrat base that is out for blood. They must contend with a President that drives his detractors crazy.
Angry people are more likely to vote than cheerful ones. This is why even with their message of prosperity, they must throw in a little fear. They must energize their base to get out to vote in order to protect the gains they’ve been able to make with the economy the last two years after a decade of decline and failure.
All of this must happen next week. If they use conventional wisdom and start their push two weeks prior to the election, they will not be able to get the message out to enough people. Unlike the Democrats who have Trump and now Kavanaugh to drive fundraising and get-out-the-vote efforts, Republicans must rely on more complicated messaging. This is why next week may determine their fates. If they can’t hammer this home now and sustain it through election day, they’re going to get beaten by the Democrats’ simpler message.
They have future Supreme Court seats to confirm and a thriving economy that must be protected from Democrats. The GOP needs their messaging to strike the right chords as quickly as possible to combat the leftist rage that’s already at its peak.
