The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, USMCA, has been agreed to by leaders of all three countries involved, but it still must be ratified by all three governments. It’s very possible the Democrats will refuse to do so for one reason and one reason only: to spite President Trump.
Even skeptics of how good of a deal could be reached (I was one of them) have to admit that NAFTA 2.0 is a good improvement on the original abysmal trade deal. It’s not perfect by any means but gives better protections to American workers and companies. Basically, it took the old deal and made it favor the U.S. on a handful of key issues. It should be ratified.
Unfortunately, it’s too easy for Democrats to spin as a negative if they win the midterms and take control on Capitol Hill. This would be a shame because there’s a 100% certainty they would love the deal if it was reached by Barack Obama. The fact that it has Trump’s name on it would be the singular reason they’d go against it.
At this point we’d be speculating and there have been no indications they are thinking about it. They still have to win the election. Nevertheless, the Brett Kavanaugh debacle has demonstrated their willingness to put party ahead of country. Will USMCA be their next victim?
