Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court has been controversial from the start, It got even more heated during the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings and reached a crescendo with Dianne Feinstein’s politically-timed revelation of a sexual assault accusation against the judge.
Some Republicans are calling to move forward with the confirmation, claiming the accusation is not credible. Doing so would be a huge mistake. They should hit the brakes, reorganize the bus, take stock of where they stand, and formulate a plan to hear all concerned parties before moving forward. If they do it right, they can satisfy many who are questioning Kavanaugh on the basis of the accusation and still have time to confirm him before the midterm elections.
First and foremost, they must hear what Christine Blasey Ford, Kavanaugh’s accuser, has to say about the alleged incident. This can’t come second hand. They must talk to her directly and on the record. Failure to do so will taint Kavanaugh’s confirmation process.
Once they hear from Ford, they have to hear from Kavanaugh again. That seems to be the plan, which is good, but there’s more to it.
To appease those who are on the fence about Kavanaugh, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell must give them the opportunity to hear Ford if possible as well as Kavanaugh. Whatever it takes to make that happen, McConnell has to do it. There are currently six Senators to watch, according to NBC:
Six senators to watch as Kavanaugh confirmation fight heats up
The political dynamics of Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination have shifted since allegations surfaced that he assaulted a girl when he was in high school.
But the same handful of publicly undecided Republicans and Democrats still hold the fate of Kavanaugh’s nomination in their hands as lawmakers try to figure out the best way to reconcile the allegations of Christine Blasey Ford with Kavanaugh’s denial — and whether their votes would be affected by the outcome of that exercise.
The three Democrats listed as on the fence are done. Now that they have the Ford accusation, they have nothing to fear by voting against his confirmation. Two of the three Republicans still have concerns that can be met. As for Jeff Flake, the lame duck Senator has very little to lose. If his future holds positions with conservative organizations, he may need to be find a way to get behind Kavanaugh. If he’s going purely private, then it comes down to a battle over his conscience.
Democrats are using every political weapon and dirty trick in the arsenal to stop the Kavanaugh confirmation. Republicans don’t have to. If they’re systematic and fair in their approach, they can get it done. They just have to remember they still hold most of the cards.
Covid variant BA.5 is spreading. It appears milder but much more contagious and evades natural immunity. Best to boost your immune system with new Z-Dtox and Z-Stack nutraceuticals from our dear friend, the late Dr. Vladimir Zelenko.
There’s no need to “hit the brakes”.
Teh FBI has time to investigate and report before the scheduled confirmation vote.
If the initial report comes back “we need more time because of:xyz” then the vote should be pushed back.
Most of the allegations have already been discredited and brought into doubt by news reports published today.
MS. Ford needs to be told that she will be subjected to forensic investigation of her finances, and the finances of her entire family, and be subject to possible Court Ordered Psychological Evaluation should she insist on pressing these allegations and any of the allegations are demonstrated to be false. In addition, if the investigation by FBI turns up anything that rises to the level of a possible felony she could find herself facing a Federal Grand Jury.
These 11th hour Political Theater histrionics need to be stomped out in the same fashion that a small fire is prevented from becoming a major conflagration. The intent of this entire scenario is to delay the Kavanaugh Vote, By Any Means Necessary. If it is allowed to succeed it will only encourage more of the same disruptive partisan behavior on the part of those pushing this story.
