It’s one thing to renegotiate free trade deals. That’s what the President has been doing in an attempt to make the deals more favorable for U.S. businesses and workers. It’s another thing to bash the concept of free trade itself.
President Trump doesn’t understand conservative fiscal values that have helped mold our nation’s economy for decades.
On Tuesday, he made his feelings towards free trade clear:
I smile at Senators and others talking about how good free trade is for the U.S. What they don’t say is that we lose Jobs and over 800 Billion Dollars a year on really dumb Trade Deals….and these same countries Tariff us to death. These lawmakers are just fine with this!

The sentiment is not completely wrong, but it’s not free trade as a concept that’s at fault. We haven’t had true free trade negotiated on behalf of American businesses since before the Cold War. What the President needs to understand is free trade works for those in a position of strength, such as the United States, when it’s implemented properly.
Dismissing it wholesale as the President has done is not only extremely progressive. It’s damaging as well.
