The National Football League has an image problem. While most are pointing to the unpatriotic kneelers who are disrespecting everything about America when they take a knee during the National Anthem as the cause of the league’s woes, it’s not. They were the trigger point, but this could have been handled early on had the league responded properly.
What response would have been proper? Rather than acting like deer caught in the headlights, they should have come out strongly by declaring this is the fans’ league. While some freedom of speech activists on the right and social justice warriors on the left may have loudly balked, the general fan base would have appreciated the sentiment. All the league had to do is say something like this:
“We will not force any players to stand for the National Anthem, but we oppose their use of the league as a way to make a political statement. This league is about the fans who pay money and spend time to watch football. Players who take advantage of the goodwill given to them by protesting before the game are not acting in the best interests of the league, nation, themselves, or the fans. While they’re on the clock, we strongly encourage them to respect the nation that makes their dreams of playing football possible.”
Would it have changed the kneelers’ minds? Probably not. In fact, there may have been more of them doing it as a result. The fact that President Trump inserted himself into the conversation is why it grew so big in the first place, so the league would be accused of bending to his will. There’s some validity to this, but who cares? At the very least it would have demonstrated they care more about the fans than the primadonnas.
Now, the league is searching for answers in all the wrong places:
The NFL Is Crafting A Plan To Win Back Viewers, Ticket Holders
The National Football League is reportedly hard at work crafting a “comeback plan” to entice viewers and ticket-holders to return to watching and attending games.
The only problem is, they’re still not quite sure why people aren’t showing up and spending money on professional football.
The NFL is at a very precarious point in their history. The future of football rests on whether or not they can figure out what really troubles them. They can point to this circumstance or that action by others, but until they realize it’s the league itself that’s at fault, they’re going to be befuddled by it all.
