Politico is a left-leaning publication. They’re not quite as hardcore liberal as Buzzfeed, Salon, or Alternet, but they’re generally left of mainstream media which is left of center. That’s why I was so pleasantly surprised when they posted a story earlier this week titled, “The secret backstory of how Obama let Hezbollah off the hook.”
Ideology slips through into every journalist’s work, but journalistic integrity demands that they follow the news and report the truth, so for that doing that, Josh Meyer deserves kudos.
Here’s the story:
The secret backstory of how Obama let Hezbollah off the hook
In its determination to secure a nuclear deal with Iran, the Obama administration derailed an ambitious law enforcement campaign targeting drug trafficking by the Iranian-backed terrorist group Hezbollah, even as it was funneling cocaine into the United States, according to a POLITICO investigation.
The campaign, dubbed Project Cassandra, was launched in 2008 after the Drug Enforcement Administration amassed evidence that Hezbollah had transformed itself from a Middle East-focused military and political organization into an international crime syndicate that some investigators believed was collecting $1 billion a year from drug and weapons trafficking, money laundering and other criminal activities.
What makes this so important is that ideology was put aside to highlight a hero that many leftist journalists worship: Barack Obama. The story accuses his administration of willfully enabling a terrorist organization to illegal raise funds that can be used against our allies and the United States itself, all for the sake of his “legacy” foreign policy maneuver, the Iran nuclear deal.
Most mainstream media news outlets are completely ignoring the story in hopes that it will simply go away. Keep in mind if this had been George W. Bush or Donald Trump, they’d be willing to set aside the Russia investigation in order to highlight this laser-powered spotlights. It’s not Bush or Trump. It’s Obama. Therefore, the semi-coordinated effort to pretend the news away is in motion:
Iran Drug-Running Scandal: Mainstream Media Ignore Obama’s Cover-up
In May 2016, deputy national-security adviser Ben Rhodes took a victory lap in the New York Times to celebrate the Obama administration’s signature foreign-policy win. Rhodes had helped orchestrate the campaign to ensure that Congress would fail to stop President Obama’s Iran nuclear deal from going into effect, and in a remarkably unguarded interview for a New York Times Magazine profile, the failed novelist–turned–foreign-policy spinmaster boasted of how a tame press corps that he dubbed an “echo chamber” had done his bidding.
At the time, some in the Obama camp chastised Rhodes for spilling the beans on how the mainstream media had dutifully bought the president’s disingenuous arguments for a pact that did not end the nuclear threat, expired within a decade (making an Iranian bomb inevitable), and both strengthened and enriched the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism, with few tough questions asked. But while Rhodes and the rest of the Obama team have given way to President Trump’s staff, the media echo chamber devoted to defending Obama’s appeasement of Iran that he cultivated is still with us.
Will they succeed? They may have been able to, except the story was noticed by enough people to bring it up to government officials. It eventually made it to Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ desk. Now, the story won’t be going away:
BREAKING. Jeff Sessions Orders Investigation of Obama Protecting Hezbollah Drug Runners
I just posted on the media omerta on the story Politico ran this week on how the Obama administration allowed Hezbollah to run drugs and plot terrorist operations with impunity for fear of offending their sponsor, Iran. This was because Obama had decided that a deal with Iran on their nuclear weapons was going to be the centerpiece of his second term.
Maybe the media hasn’t noticed the story, but the Attorney General has.
This is why good journalism is so important. Had the Politico story never run, chances are slim the Justice Department would have ever known to look at the deal. This investigation is a direct result of the story. In case anyone thinks this is a one-sided opinion, we could easily look at the Roy Moore situation where a thorough investigation by the Washington Post gave a Senate seat to the Democrats.
Great journalism isn’t just about reporting to the public. Sometimes, it can be the initial investigation arm without attachment to law enforcement or the government. This makes it essential to a free society. If more journalists acted with this level of skill and integrity instead of ranting for the sake of page views and book deals, we’d be better off as a nation.
