This story has been discussed ad nauseam ever since President Trump announced the U.S. recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. We’re revisiting it for one specific reason: The notion that sovereignty supersedes sovereignty.
Here’s the brief setup. Proponents of the move say that Israel is a sovereign nation that can pick their own capital. The United States is a sovereign nation that can choose to recognize our ally’s chosen capital. The United Nations is wrong to try to make that recognition “null and void.”
So far, so good. The question comes based upon threats by the President against nations who voted in favor of the United Nation’s resolution. Opponents to the President’s move claim he’s being a hypocrite because the nations that voted in favor of the resolution are also sovereign nations and are therefore entitled to their own opinion. No way to argue that, right? Case closed.
Here’s the problem with that. The President didn’t say anything about them not being entitled to their own opinion as sovereign nations. He simply implied we send aid to many nations around the world. Why would we continue to send aid to those who oppose us or our allies?
He never questioned their sovereignty. He simply stated there were consequences for denying us our sovereignty and he’s very much within his rights to make those threats. We aren’t demanding other countries need to acknowledge the truth about Jerusalem. We’re simply telling them they can’t tell us to embrace their lies.
As I’ve been very consistent since the election, I am not a Trump supporter. I have, however, been fair when it comes to his actions and words, critical when necessary and approving when appropriate. This is one of those (few) instances where he’s 100% right across the board.
The President needs to back up his threat. He should ask Congress to immediately put on hold all or part of aid packages sent to those nations who blatantly questioned our right to sovereignty. They can put their embassies wherever they want. So can we.
