A Federal Judge declared a mistrial in the case against Cliven Bundy and his sons over a standoff between the Bundys and their supporters with militarized forces of the federal government.
The Bureau Of Land Management (BLM) attempted to seize cattle owned by the Bundy family over their alleged failure to pay grazing fees on federal land. Their militant methods caused an uproar and citizens from across the country showed up at the Bundy Ranch, armed and expecting that there could very well be combat against government forces.
Among the 6 documents that the government refused to turn over to the defense was evidence that the FBI had been conducting surveillance on the Bundy Ranch via a camera, and that snipers from BLM were positioned around the ranch, isolating the Bundy family. The government had called the claims of snipers crazy conspiracy theories, but their refusal to turn over the documents ordered by the Judge to be turned over calls into question the government’s claims.
The whole Bundy Ranch standoff highlighted a tumultuous Obama Administration where many Americans felt more threatened by their own government than they did by the Islamic terrorists threatening death on a daily basis.
Obama’s BLM clearly felt emboldened enough to believe that a heavily armed move on the Bundy Ranch would be tolerated by American citizens, a belief that was quickly put in check.
The question now becomes if these sameness American patriots will maintain this vigilance. While President Trump has made some gains in rolling back the Federal government’s iron grip on the citizenry, the slow pace of an increasingly liberal Congress, not to mention Trump’s own inability to maintain an attention span, makes it unlikely that he will make enough strides during his first 4 years in office.
It is likely that 2020 will have Americans once again under the self-inflicted gunshot wound that is a Democrat Presidency, and the iron grip of the “fourth branch of government,” otherwise known as the bureaucracy, begins crushing Americans once again.
In fact, if the Alabama senate election is any indication, President Trump may very well have a Democratic controlled Congress to deal with in January of 2019, and with it any chance of continued shrinkage of the power of the Federal Government. Trump has shown a remarkable inability to get things passed through Congress, despite his campaign claims of being able to make “the best deals.” His recent tax reform bill is his sole major legislative win, and that one was really just a restructuring of the current horrible tax system.
Once government continues to grow once again, it is likely that incidents like what happened at the Bundy Ranch in 2014 could happen again, and even more often. Many Americans are fed up with working to provide to their families only to have so much stolen from them by the government to provide for people who don’t work, and many of whom are in the country illegally.
The Bundy Ranch incident clearly demonstrates that there are plenty of Americans who will not take such totalitarian moves as the seizure of personal property without due process lying down. It is also clear that the government will go to great lengths to hold Americans in the iron grip of control. Otherwise, why would the federal prosecutors have refused a court order to provide documents? This is once again an example of law enforcement overreach, and federal law enforcement are the worst offenders. If they are not put in check, it isn’t that far a road for us to become a banana republic.
