Today, the United Nations put forth a draft resolution stating, “that any decisions and actions which purport to have altered the character, status or demographic composition of the Holy City of Jerusalem have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded in compliance with relevant resolutions of the Security Council.”
United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley vetoed it, of course. This was not in doubt at any point, but the U.N. Security Council wanted to get themselves on record denouncing President Trump’s move to embrace Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The U.S. should do the same thing right back at them.
Let’s put forth a draft legislation stating the United Nations recognizes that sovereign member nations have the right to declare their own capitals and request that other nations respect their decision. Furthermore, contested cities such as Jerusalem shall not be excluded simply because nations that do not exist, including Palestine, claim rights to said city.
This will be vetoed even more quickly. The other 14 members of the Security Council will be tripping all over themselves trying to veto it first.
Get them on record. It’s not that they don’t believe in sovereignty, but only when it’s convenient. Jerusalem is inconvenient, therefore it’s treated special. This wouldn’t do much other than to reiterate our stance and the stance of Israel. It’s worth it.
