So John Conyers (D-MI) has now “retired” and endorsed his 27-year-old son to succeed him. Given his district’s long run of poor decision-making, it is likely Conyers will get his wish. Conyers was forced to step down after numerous allegations of sexual assault and harassment were unveiled.
Reporter Cokie Roberts even said, “oh we all knew not to get on an elevator with him.” Well Cokie, you didn’t say anything because…? I bet you would have if he were a Republican.
Even Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) called on Conyers to resign just days after defending him as “an icon.” Of course, it’s not like his seat is likely to be filled by a Republican in the long run.
Senator Al Franken (D-MN) looks poised to resign after multiple female Democratic Senators called on him today to resign. Apparently, six different women making allegations was just too much. The five it stood at yesterday was fine. Of course, since Minnesota’s Governor Mark Dayton is a Democrat, it doesn’t cost them anything to call for Franken, the failed comedian who won in a razor-thin election, to resign.
A more meaningful move would have been to call on Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) to resign after he was out on trial for bribery and he was accused of utilizing the services of a multitude of underage prostitutes. Of course, that would have meant Governor Chris Christie, who is TECHNICALLY a Republican, would have gotten to fill Menendez’s seat, and that would have been a bridge too far.
Now, we MAY see calls on Menendez to resign from his fellow Democrats, but only AFTER Governor-elect Phil Murphy takes over and gets to fill the seat.
The Democrats are scrambling to at least appear to claim the moral high ground of personal responsibility for conduct that Republicans surrendered when they nominated and then elected Donald Trump to be President. The immediate goal would be to help Doug Jones defeat Roy Moore for the Senate seat in Alabama once held by Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
If Moore does win, they may hope to get him to resign, but the seat will still be held by a Republican, as the governor of Alabama, Kay Ivey, is a member of the GOP. It is likely that whoever Ivey appoints will be somewhat more malleable for the Democrats and the liberal Republicans like Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) than Moore.
It is always about politics with both sides. They’re all professional politicians and all of these empty gestures are just empty virtue signaling.
I somehow doubt McConnell and Mitt Romney would have been so quick to condemn Luther Strange, their preferred establishment candidate if the same 40-year-old accusations had been made against him. As I wrote about a few weeks ago, I think it likely that McConnell knew about these accusations beforehand, but kept them as his ace in the hole to ensure a Moore defeat in the general if Strange failed to secure the nomination.
I’m quite certain the majority of people will be fooled by the empty virtue signaling from both sides. Many of those who do see it for what it is will then lump those of us who are truly disgusted with all of them on both sides in with the ones who are insincere, assuming incorrectly but understandably that we would have preferred an establishment candidate.
I’ve said this before and I’ll keep saying it:
Do a better job picking your nominees Republicans. Stop surrendering the moral high ground. With their mortal lock on the media narrative Democrats will find it all too easy to make it seem as if they have taken it over, even with their love affair of mass infanticide.
