John Hawkins makes some very going points here:
7 Things Conservatives Can Learn From Donald Trump’s First Year in Office
2) Conservatives Have Lost Faith In The Old Guard Institutions And Personalities: The attitude seems to be, “What good did all these talk radio hosts, conservative websites and columnists do? Did the country move to the Right under Bush? Did conservatives stop it from moving Left under Obama? Our nation is going down the tubes and what you’re doing isn’t working!” Do I think that’s entirely fair? No. There are a lot of conservatives who have pushed the right approach, but getting rid of people like McCain and McConnell is hard and getting them to put the country first is nearly impossible. At the end of the day though, if there are no results, people will take that Al Davis attitude and say, “Just win, baby” and they won’t be all that particular about how it gets done.
#7) The Republican Establishment is Hopeless and Must Be Replaced: If Trump’s election didn’t wake up the GOP establishment, then it’s hard to know what could possibly do it. The very fact that the Republicans didn’t even make a good faith effort to get rid of Obamacare after railing against it non-stop for years tells you it’s time to give up on them. They’re never going to change. What that means is that we have to get McConnell, Ryan, McCain, Flake, Corker, Graham, Alexander, Heller, Portman, Murkowski, Capito, Collins, etc. out of office if we want to save the country. These are people who will fiddle while America burns and laugh at how dumb anyone was to have ever trusted them as they stand in the ashes.
I do have comments on #2 and #7 of his commentary.
2. One reason why you can’t get rid of John McCain and Mitch McConnell is because they know how to use the art of pravda or propaganda (and the money to accomplish this) to convince the voters to keep them in office. People can be uncomfortable with change and sadly in the areas that they represent they keep getting reelected. They play to their base well when they need to buy votes from them, and McCain and McConnell are planning to stay in office until the Grim Reaper himself says its time.
7. Hawkins sees correctly that the Republican Establishment is the problem. They are playing the fiddle but unlike Sam and Nero they are still looking down on us and seeing ‘We the People’ instead of them being the lion’s dinner. McCain, McConnell, Corker (well, he is a lame duck), Collins, Ryan are all in this orchestra and choir and they seeing their audience devoured. When America finally takes the fall, most of these punks will take the money and fly away, leaving us with the bag…if we survive the lions that is. It’s going to take more than getting rid of the establishment. It’s going to take an overall replacement of the Republican party. They don’t want to be reformed which is fine. We just need to throw out the old wineskins and bring in the NEW wineskins.
