Representative John Conyers, who has been embattled by sexual harassment accusations, is stepping down from his role as ranking Democrat on the powerful House Judiciary Committee. The Ethics Committee will investigate these accusations to determine if further action is necessary.
He Tweeted about it just after noon Eastern:
After careful consideration and in light of the attention drawn by recent allegations made against me, I have notified the Democratic Leader of my request to step aside as Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee during the investigation of these matters.
— John Conyers, Jr. (@RepJohnConyers) November 26, 2017
I deny these allegations, many of which were raised by documents reportedly paid for by a partisan alt-right blogger. I very much look forward to vindicating myself and my family before the House Committee on Ethics.

To be clear, I would like very much to remain as Ranking Member. There is still much work to be done on core concerns like securing civil rights, enacting meaningful criminal justice reform, and protecting access to the ballot box.

These challenges could not be more pressing in the face of an Administration that cares little for the rule of law and a President whose actions and conduct cheapens our discourse every day.
— John Conyers, Jr. (@RepJohnConyers) November 26, 2017
But I have come to believe that my presence as Ranking Member on the Committee would not serve these efforts while the Ethics Committee investigation is pending.
— John Conyers, Jr. (@RepJohnConyers) November 26, 2017
I cannot in good conscience allow these charges to undermine my colleagues in the Democratic Caucus, and my friends on both sides of the aisle in the Judiciary Committee and the House of Representatives.

I am proud and fortunate to be part of a legacy of more than 50 years of fighting for civil rights and making our country more equitable and just.

I’ll never allow that legacy – a legacy I owe to my father John Conyers, Sr., who integrated labor unions, or my two amazing sons John III & Carl and my loving wife Monica, and the extraordinary people of Detroit – to be cast aside, or these causes to be in any way diminished.
— John Conyers, Jr. (@RepJohnConyers) November 26, 2017
I am grateful to my colleagues who have called for due process before weighing judgment. I would urge them to continue to do so for any Member accused of wrongdoing. Basic fairness requires no less.

As he noted in one of his Tweets, he’s been in Congress for half-a-century, serving longer than any current member. When he was first elected, President Trump was just starting college.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi did an interview this morning praising Conyers as an “icon” but stating that as he reviews his case, “he will do the right thing.”
Her office issued a statement:
Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., will take over Conyers’ role on the committee.

Representative John Conyers, who has paid a settlement from your tax dollars to someone who accused him of sexual harassment, has announced that he is stepping down from his position as Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee:
Conyers still denies the allegation and, rather charmingly, believes that the evidence should be examined before curb-stomping him. I think it is safe to say that Conyers’ remaining tenure in Congress is going to be short. Pelosi’s attack signals the Democrats on the House Ethics Committee to show no mercy.

Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., will succeed Conyers in the role. Nadler was one of the first Democratic lawmakers to call for an ethics committee investigation into Conyers following the Buzzfeed report on a settlement with between Conyers’ office and a former staffer who reported sexual harassment.
“Even under these unfortunate circumstances, the important work of the Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee must move forward. Ranking Member Conyers has a 50-year legacy of advancing the cause of justice, and my job moving forward is to continue that critical work,” Nadler said in a statement.

Four former staffers signed affidavits alleging that the longest serving House member made repeated sexual advances to his female staffers as well as having members of his staff contact and transport women they believe he was having affairs with. Two of the women stated in their affidavits that they thought he was using office funds to pay for their travel to and from his apartment and hotel rooms.
Among the other inappropriate sexual behavior named was caressing, touching, and asking for sexual favors.
The woman who settled with the congressman went through a lengthy process in dealing with Conyers’ unwanted sexual advances.”
