The damaging article from the Washington Post and the subsequent backlash from people in both parties are enough to make any politician want to walk away from a campaign. He’s being brutalized because of the seriousness of allegations that he sexually abused a 14-year-old girl when he was 32-years-old nearly four decades ago. Between the attacks and the dramatically reduced chances that he could actually win, there’s only one viable reason for him to stay in the race.
If he didn’t do it, he should stay in. It’s as simple as that.
Pragmatism for the party is out the door. It’s too late for the GOP to replace him on the ballot, so falling on his sword is off the table. He could fold under the pressure and walk away, declaring he’s innocent but seeing no path forward thanks to false accusations. That’s possible, but Moore’s history says he doesn’t fold often if he feels he’s in the right.
All of this brings us back to the original premise. If he’s innocent, he should stay in.
Tell the full story
If he’s innocent, it’s unfortunate that he now has to defend himself against allegations that would be nearly impossible to completely debunk. It puts him in a situation where credibility is all he has left and based upon the allegations, his credibility is fading fast.
The only way he can address it is to take everything in the Washington Post story and tell his side of the story piece by piece. A blanket denial won’t cut it. He needs to confront the stories that all four women have told and explain in detail what happened. This person is lying. That person is misleading. This person is correct. With one of the stories, the girl he allegedly dated was 18. His only crime there was allegedly buying alcohol at restaurants that she drank when the legal drinking age was 19.
The other allegations are more serious. In particular, Leigh Corfman’s tale of sexual abuse at the hands of a much older man would have to somehow be completely debunked. That’s going to be very hard because the way the story’s detailed is extremely compelling. She allegedly told friends about Moore. A decade later, she allegedly told her mother. She’s allegedly not a liberal with a grudge against Republicans, claiming she’s always voted Republican and supported Donald Trump.
Her story seems very credible. Moore would have to tell a great story and probably accompany it with strong evidence that he couldn’t have done what she said. Four decades later, that evidence likely doesn’t exist.
Not innocent until proven guilty
I’ve read a lot of posts on social media invoking the stance the United States takes on legal charges. This situation doesn’t involve legalities. In the court of public opinion, there is no burden of proof beyond what it takes to sway the general public’s perspectives. Voters look at what candidates say and what others say about them to make a decision about who they’re going to support.
We’re in a very sensitive moment in American history with major sexual crime allegations flung at powerful men on a daily basis. The floodgates are opened and people are realizing just how much evil exists in the various seats of power.
All of this combined to form the perfect storm for taking down a politician. Today, that politician is Roy Moore. If the allegations are true, he should absolutely step aside. If they’re false, he should do what he can to fight them. Chances are strong the only people who know the truth are Moore and his alleged victims.
