The second leg of the third Star Wars trilogy hasn’t even been released yet, but Disney is already working on a fourth trilogy. It’s being developed by Rian Johnson, the writer-director of the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi set to be released December 15, 2017.
“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”
The new trilogy is supposed to be completely separate from the movie universe we’ve seen built for the last 40 years. Eight movies, an animated series, several video games, and countless books have generated a modern mythology more robust than those of ancient times. Johnson’s addition will have different characters and take place in a different part of the galaxy, but there’s no word about which portion of the timeline it will tackle. The current Star Wars timeline spans thousands of years if you include all forms of media, though the movies span approximately seventy years.
“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi,” Johnson and longtime collaborator Ram Bergman said in a joint statement. “Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”
Bergman is set to produce the new series.
There are also reports that Disney is planning a live-action television series for its streaming service.
