First of all, thank you, Jamie Brown, for your piece on Worship Music in the Church getting out of control and heading for a big time crash. Brown is a fan of Christian Worship music who gets it. He sees what can happen when faith gets over commercialized. Eventually just like the climax of The Who’s rock opera “Tommy” the masses will get fed up and the Christian Culture as we know will become history and rightfully so.
We’re not gonna take it
Never did and never will
Don’t want no religion
And as far as we can tell
We ain’t gonna take you
Never did and never will
We forsake you
Let’s forget you better still
I am not a fan of the current trends in Christian Music. I enjoyed the Contemporary Christian Music that was put out in the 1970’s and 80’s and somewhat early 1990’s. However, along the way, some felt that it could make money and draw even bigger audiences if they merged their music with the church. Sadly too many did and I am glad Brown is telling the church to slow down. This is coming from a Worship Music fan. I personally don’t like CCM in this day and age, and prefer to listen to Hard Rock/Metal, classic 1970’s and 80’s soft rock/pop, Jazz, Classical, Indy Music, and a handful of pop artists that are trying to buck the popular trends like Adele and One Direction’s Harry Styles as a solo artist. If you will not listen to Jonathan Aigner and his call to return the church back to its basics (hymns, classic liturgy, emphasis on the Bread and Wine, use of the pipe organ and choirs, congregational singing, and weakening the Worship Industry), at least not yet. Listen to someone who understands that Contemporary Worship is going too far and becoming more like a country pop rock concert mess rather than honest worship of God. Even onetime CCM singer Rob Frazier (thanks for the link to this story and I loved some of his music back in the day) gets this.
Is Evangelical Worship Headed for a Huge Crash?
Recently, I spent a couple of days attending a worship leader conference featuring many well-known speakers and worship leaders. The conference was held about 15 minutes down the road from me, so it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. I’m glad I went.
I met some new people, heard some thought-provoking teaching, enjoyed some good meals and conversations with worship leader friends, and experienced in person some of the modern worship trends that are becoming the norm in evangelicalism.
It was eye-opening in many ways.
