Lebron James made a statement Friday night against the Washington Wizards. He ended the Cavaliers’ skid with 57 points and showed us something he hasn’t done very often throughout his career. He scored with his back tot he basket.
Since he first entered the league, he’s been a play-creator. He’s always wanted the ball up top so he could create with his dribble, opening up other players so he could pass if double-teamed or score if not. Now that he’s entering the twilight of his career, he’s taking a page from Michael Jordan’s playbook by working on his fadeaway and other back-to-the-basket moves.
It’s about time.
We’ll see if that’s the case in upcoming games but based on his performance Friday, he’d be crazy not to try. He’s always been a major conundrum for teams trying to defend him. He has the ball-handling skills of a point guard and the size of a power forward. If he can elevate that portion of his game as Jordan did around this time in his career, he may have a couple more championship runs in his future.
What’s really exciting is the prospect of him playing this style when Isaiah Thomas when he comes back from injury. The combo may be too much for the league to handle.
ESPN has a nice writeup on the potential for a Jordanesque Lebron:
NBA — LeBron puts on a never-before-seen show
Since James reached legal drinking age more than a decade ago, there have been calls for him to develop into a back-to-the-basket player. He didn’t become interested in it until 2011, however, when he spent time during the NBA lockout working with Hakeem Olajuwon, bringing a camera crew to tape the sessions so he could refer to them later.
He has improved over the years, but it has come slowly. His body and skill set — James is ambidextrous, the sort of talent that makes him a dream post player — make it seem as if he should live there. But his nature is to play on the perimeter and to create on the move; it’s how he has played since he was a young boy. It’s how he has become one of the greatest players of all time.
