Special Counsel Robert Mueller is charged to investigate the Trump campaign’s relationships with Russia before and during the election, but things have taken a leftward turn as the investigation looks into the Podesta Group, co-founded by Tony and John Podesta. John was the chair for the Hilary Clinton presidential campaign and is no longer directly affiliated with the group.
Tony is the focus of the investigation. The group’s involvement started off as a fact-finding inquiry into Paul Manafort’s dealings with the European Centre for a Modern Ukraine, a nonprofit backed by pro-Russia elements. In the course of the inquiry, it was discovered that the Podesta Group was also involved in lobbying for Ukraine but had failed to file proper paperwork declaring their affiliation. Now, sources say they’re being looked at as part of a criminal investigation into whether they violated the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA).
Both Manafort’s and Podesta’s organizations filed paperwork only after their involvement was reported by the media.
In a statement, a spokesman for the Podesta Group said the firm “is cooperating fully with the Special Counsel’s office and has taken every possible step to provide documentation that confirms timely compliance. In all of our client engagements, the Podesta Group conducts due diligence and consults with appropriate legal experts to ensure compliance with disclosure regulations at all times — and we did so in this case.”
In summary, we have presidential campaigns for the two major parties whose former campaign chairs were directly or indirectly involved with Russian-backed Ukrainian lobbyists in Washington DC. Those who thought the 2016 presidential election stunk probably didn’t know how far down the stench goes.

As dictated by FARA, those who lobby on behalf of foreign governments, political parties, or leaders are required to file detailed disclosures with the U.S. Justice Department. Choosing not to file is a felony, which carries a potential 5-year prison term.
The Podesta Group filed a FARA because of their work for ECMU. They just didn’t file it in a timely manner.
