For a strange tale of unintended consequences. we turn to Lynn, Massachusetts, where a coffee shop owner has decided to close its doors over reactions to anti-police sentiment expressed by the shop’s manager. It’s twice the anguish for owner Kato Mele because the manager she had to fire from White Rose Coffeehouse for causing all the turmoil is her daughter, Sophie.
In a series of social media posts, Sophie declared she is “adamantly anti-police” and would never allow “Coffee with a Cop” events at her store. This prompted the firing by her mother, but the threats continued. She offered to host police at her coffee shop on Monday. None came. Many of her normal visitors didn’t come, either. With the rapid decline in business, incoming threats, and increased stress, she decided to close the doors and focus on healing with her daughter.
Before shutting the doors, she posted this public letter to the Lynn Police Department:
The White Rose Coffee House publicly acknowledges and apologizes to all Law Enforcement agencies and specifically the Lynn Massachusetts Police Department for the reprehensible affront, distasteful, biased and hateful remarks made by the manager of the White Rose on a personal Facebook page.
We do not share any of the views expressed and are, in reality, proud and grateful to all law enforcement for their strength and brave disregard to their personal safety that they risk daily which allows us to live, work and worship in a sometimes hostile world.
Amazingly, they do so frequently under unwarranted scrutiny and with ever diminishing resources. The men and women of law enforcement are heroic. Make no mistake: I am incredibly proud of them and what they do.
Effective immediately, the manager of the White Rose Coffee House is terminated for cause.
The White Rose Coffee House realizes that we have a long road to hoe to ingratiate and demonstrate our true appreciation for law enforcement and all first responders. As a beginning, I invite interested Lynn law enforcement to visit the White Rose on Monday, Oct. 16, or anytime, to help us make amends, but more importantly provide us with some guidance and suggestions that through a cooperative effort will help make an ever improving Lynn.
I look forward to seeing you all. With gratitude and sincerest support….
Kato Mele

What Kato realized that her daughter didn’t is that there are consequences for our words and actions. This, more than anything else, makes me concerned about a future that combines the carelessness of a generation that’s had so much at their fingertips with the rampant justice system of public opinion that loves to pounce on every mistake.

Lynn Coffee Shop Manager: No Coffee With A Cop Allowed Because Cops Are Slave Catching Murderers Who Shouldn’t Be Humanized – Turtleboy
Sophie wanted to make it crystal clear in a series of Facebook posts that the White Rose Coffeehouse will NOT be participating in the “Coffee with a cop” initiative that has been going on around the country as part of a black lives matter push to improve relations between the police and the community:
Oh look, another entitled white woman speaking on behalf of people of color who never asked her to speak for them. We shouldn’t humanize the cops? Are they not human now?
