In the Trumpiest (and smartest) move he’s made this year, President Trump is being disciplined regarding the new “war” between Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and former White House adviser Steve Bannon. Instead of picking a winner or a loser, he’s decided to go down the middle. He’s on both teams.
Regarding Bannon, Trump said, “I can understand where Steve Bannon’s coming from. Steve is doing what Steve thinks is the right thing.”
As for his feelings on McConnell, the President practically got matching bracelets with him today.
What it means
This is war that the President intends to win regardless of who loses. That’s not the important part here, though. What this really tells us about the President is that he thrives when there’s chaos around him. It’s been his modus operandi throughout his business life, accentuated through the campaign, and finally realized in a “positive” way with the war. By “positive,” that’s to say that it’s not chaos directed at the nation or its government. Instead, it’s election chaos that will allow the White House to be kingmaker. As kingmaker, everyone who wins with the President’s blessing is in debt.
The beauty of playing both sides is that he gets to pick the winner based upon who he thinks will win, not whether they’re on one side or the other. He was stung once on bad advice to back Luther Strange. He won’t make the same mistake. If Bannon’s horse is in the lead in a race, the President will seal the deal. If it’s McConnell’s, the President will support that candidate.
In the whole scheme of things, this is more entertaining than anything else. It’s not crucial, but it plays perfectly to the President’s ego while keeping him out of the fray. The next few months will be fun to watch. The only loser in this will be the GOP which will be weakened by the ensuing war.

“I can understand where Steve Bannon’s coming from,” the president said. “Steve is doing what Steve thinks is the right thing.”
Just hours later, at a free-wheeling White House news conference, Trump insisted there’s not much distance between him and McConnell, who underscored the message by standing at the president’s side after the two had lunch together.
