George Lopez apparently didn’t know his audience very well when he took the stage to emcee the Carousel Ball in Denver. The event was intended to raise money for juvenile diabetes and drew a large crowd of people donating between $5,000 and $100,000 per table. One of the biggest donors, Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei, asked Lopez to avoid the Trump jokes. Maffei is a Trump supporter.
Lopez chose to ignore the request and went on in his opening to go after the President. He then went after the booing audience.
“Listen, it’s about the kids… I apologize for bringing politics to an event. This is America — it still is. So I apologize to your white privilege.”
Lopez then called for a video to be played. He never returned. His people said the comedian was only there for a four-minute segment, but the event listed Lopez as the night’s emcee.
The event raised $1.65 million.

TV host Chris Parente posted on Twitter, “big controversy: host of HUGE charity #CarouselBall, @georgelopez, makes political comments about Trump, drops f-bomb and is escorted out.” But a source close to the comedian insisted to Page Six that Lopez’s segment was “only supposed to be four minutes,” even though he was listed as the night’s emcee.
