Background
Conservatives are definitely getting their talking points out about the Harvey Weinstein scandal. Liberal politicians accepted boatloads of money from him. He has a great standing with Planned Parenthood. He’s surrounded by liberals who covered this up. Liberal comedians refused to bring it up. There’s a lot of material for conservatives to capitalize off of. So the question is: should we?
With North Korea, tax reform, and Las Vegas, one could make the argument that conservatives have something better to focus on. However, before Weinstein, gun control was the top issue of discussion. Liberals use tragedies to push their agenda. Conservatives stockpile and fight back until the general public moves on. It’s a cycle we know well. If Harvey Weinstein is a distraction, then it is certainly to the benefit of conservatives as his headlines take over the news cycle. In all seriousness, the last thing we need is a gun control vote. We should not want our Second Amendment rights put up for a vote when emotions are running high. People voting off of emotions is a bad thing. As a follow-up point, this Weinstein scandal is a much broader issue than the typical celebrity gossip.
Enter Weinstein
To be honest, I had never heard of Harvey Weinstein, and still loosely know who or what he is. He’s some big shot Hollywood executive who probably did very little of the work while taking much of the credit. Whatever, I don’t follow celebrities, and neither do many conservatives. I fully agree with my colleague’s article Harvey Weinstein – Sexual harassment isn’t a Right or Left thing. Sexual harassment isn’t and should never be a partisan issue. It’s wrong whether people on the right or left do it. Yet when Bill O’Reilly was found out, liberals had their field day. And now that Weinstein’s been exposed, conservatives are having theirs. And why not? Like I mentioned, there are plenty of talking points to be talked. So I’ll pose a second question, what is the goal of capitalizing off Weinstein?
Conservative media is all over this, but I get the feeling their goal is to score buckets in a political basketball game with liberals. Rallying the conservatives in this ideological battle might pin liberals’ ears back, but is that all they are trying to accomplish. We know that sexual harassment is wrong, but are we using this to tear at our political opponents or making it further known that sexual harassment, rape, abuse is unacceptable. It appears conservative media is doing the former. But I propose we do something else.
Conservatives have definitely pinpointed the fact that many in Hollywood covered up this monster. Scarlett Madison correctly points that out here at NOQReport. Weinstein is a monster, but the people around him were enablers. They knew exactly who he was. Seth MacFarlane joked about Best Actress Nominees no longer having to pretend to be attracted to him at the Oscars in 2013, to much applause. So of course, they knew. MacFarlane can claim that joke was a revenge blow on behalf of his colleague. I believe that, but his actions were insufficient and cowardly.
Hollywood the new Penn State?
Remember Joe Paterno. He got his statue torn down, and the NCAA changed history because of he failed to act sufficiently with Jerry Sandusky. In my opinion, Paterno was largely a scapegoat for higher-ups at Penn State. Men and women in Hollywood knew. I’m not blaming the victims for not coming out. I’m blaming all the bystanders who watched this man prey. Paterno lost a lot for something he should have done but didn’t. Hollywood is far worse. They should lose a lot for something not doing the right thing AND facilitating the environment for this evil to occur. Alas, should this not be the end goal for conservatives?
As Hollywood becomes increasingly left-leaning, is this not an opportunity to attack the very influence these people have on our culture? This isn’t just about Weinstein. Hollywood has an entrenched culture of unacceptable behavior and a long history of taking advantage of women and even men. Terry Crews tweeted a thread on his experience.
This whole thing with Harvey Weinstein is giving me PTSD. Why? Because this kind of thing happened to ME. (1/Cont.)

Yet these corrupt executives hold a lot of influence over our culture. This is what conservatives need to fight. Harvey Weinstein is not a distraction, but a wakeup call. Progressivism is a reckoning threat to this country largely because of Hollywood’s influence. As Hollywood, calls for gun control, bathroom nonsense, single payer, socialism, and wack global warming laws, liberalism gains influence. But these are the same people covering up rape, abuse, and harassment. Paterno got his statue torn down. They should lose their platforms. In seeking this, conservatives would not only be fighting to put an end to Hollywood’s toxic culture but also its toxic influence on our country as a whole. The two toxicities go hand-in-hand. Commenting on Harvey Weinstein shouldn’t be a means for political brownie points, but a means to better our culture.

This would make sense if someone other tha Ronin Farrow, who once worked for the Obama administration, had broken the story. This may only appear to be working for the “right” at the moment, but I think there is more to this that is yet to come. Perhaps it is tilling the soil for something else, another story or a changing of the guard in some way, or perhaps it was meant to shut down the Las Vegas story as it falls apart. Usually a lamb is sacrificed for big reasons.
