One of my favorite authors is Billy Hallowell. He wrote a compelling and uplifting piece over at FaithWire concerning Jeff Bauman, who lost both legs in the Boston Marathon bombing terror attack in 2013. Bauman penned an emotional and stirring letter to the victims of the Mandalay Massacre in Las Vegas. He’s encouraging the victim’s in Vegas to hold on to hope with everything they’ve got. And to not only concentrate on healing their bodies, but their minds and souls. He made a point that they shouldn’t be afraid to take help from friends and loved ones.
‘You Will Live Again’: Boston Bombing Victim Who Lost Both Legs in Attack Pens Emotional Letter to Las Vegas Shooting Survivors – Faithwire
“To those who lost friends and loved ones — I’m so sorry,” Jeff Bauman wrote. “I know there are no words that can bring comfort, but please know that the world is behind you.”
Don’t turn your back on God
Right now, just as Bauman woke up in a strange hospital and realized what had happened to him, many people are coming to grips with their circumstances as well in Las Vegas. Many of those lives will never be the same. When my father passed in my arms years ago from a double heart attack, I grieved for a year. I did not think I could go on, but I did. I can’t know the pain of these people, but I know that they can overcome this. Life goes on and you will live, love and laugh again. You have to have more faith than you have ever had and don’t turn your back on God.
“Stronger”
A new movie is in the works telling Bauman’s story. It’s called “Stronger” and it stars actor Jake Gyllenhaal. Jake also encouraged those who are injured and struggling right now. I’m sure many people are hurt and confused, but you can’t give in to despair. That only leads to death and for yourself and those that love you, you have to live… you owe it to yourself, your loved ones and those that perished. Many will be angry and turn from God, wondering how He could do this. He didn’t, but He is with you, whether you believe in Him or not. I know, I’ve been there.
Bauman knows the pain these people are going through and he had some words of advice for them. “Remember that healing your mind is just as important as healing your physical, visible injuries,” he said. “It took me too many years and dark moments to realize that and it is so, so important.” Bauman continued, “You will walk again. You will laugh again. You will dance again. You will live again.” He’s right. Bauman went on to get married and have a child. He wrote a book as well. He walks and plays in the sunshine and his lack of legs does not stop him. You are not your body… you are the soul that is within.
“Use your support group around you,” Bauman told Megyn Kelly on TODAY Tuesday. “That’s huge because usually when people go through something dramatic, you tend to isolate a lot, and I did in my recovery. I isolated a lot and pushed people away from me that were trying to help, so I would just recommend that you don’t isolate and that you work on both your physical and mental recovery.”
Give to Las Vegas Victims’ Fund
He concluded his words of encouragement by telling people to donate to the Las Vegas Victims’ Fund. The GoFundMe account that was put together to benefit victims of the shooting has already raised more than $8 million of its $10 million goal. If you want to help the victims in Las Vegas, donating what you can is the best way right now. The response from people across the world has been huge and they can’t handle the amount of items coming in. I think even the blood banks are full right now. But you can give… every penny will help these people go on with their lives and start to recover from the largest mass shooting in US history, where 59 were killed and 527 were wounded. Even more importantly, you can pray, because through prayer all things are possible.
