A gunman fired from the 32nd floor of a building in Las Vegas on Sunday, killing “at least 50,” according to Las Vegas Sheriff Joe Lombardo. The shooting also wounded more than 500 during a music festival.
Sunday’s shooting is one of the deadliest in recent US history.
The assailant has been identified as Stephen Paddock, 64, a resident of Mesquite, Nevada. Police have confirmed the suspect was known to them, and this does not appear to be an incident of terrorism. Terrorism or not, it is certainly terrifying.
At least one assailant with an automatic weapon opened fire on crowds at the Las Vegas Strip late Sunday night. The Route 91 Harvest Music Festival outside the Mandalay Bay Resort has been verified as a target, though reports of other venues hit by attacks are still coming in.
1:49 a.m. PT:
Videos posted to social media sound like war zones as magazine after magazine are emptied into crowds. Early reports indicate at least 20 dead and over 100 injured. The suspected shooter, a Las Vegas local, was reported as “down” by the Las Vegas Police Department. He has been confirmed killed.
Reports indicate the gunfire came from a room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay. SWAT officers who entered the room reported multiple weapons were present.
There are three individuals currently being held by authorities, though their suspected involvement has not been released. Another person of interest, Marilou Danley, is being sought by police. Her M-Life Gold Card was found in the suspect’s room.
