Those dedicated to saving our great Republic and who want to see the Federalist Party succeed can learn a lot from Joel Kurtinitis–Freelance Columnist at The Des Moines Register and Co-Founder of the Federalist Party.
Numerous posts on social media and countless articles have been written about the negative behavior of politicians, party leaders and other public figures, but rarely do we see reports of behavior that changed someone’s life for the better. I believe it is high time we recognize some of our unsung heroes and shine a spotlight on positive encounters. Joel Kurtinitis influenced someone’s life for the better, and I believe my sharing of this story is long overdue.
America at its worst
The anger, hatred and corruption of the 2016 election cycle trampled over America like the country’s recent storms. It divided communities, churches and families, as battle lines were drawn like never before. I watched as some of my own friends became unrecognizable, merely because I preferred another primary candidate over Donald Trump.
Many Americans simply stopped having conversations in lieu of throwing angry fits at those who opposed their viewpoint. Voters did not merely choose their own candidates, they waged war against anyone who preferred someone else. Friends turned on friends, people disowned relatives, church congregations divided against themselves instead of reaching the world with the gospel, and angry mobs of haters demanded that conservatives bow the knee to Donald Trump or be forever marked down as traitors.
A shelter in the storm
Fortunately, the Federalist Party emerged against all odds to offer a home to people such as myself, who became party orphans in 2016. Nevertheless, a person can have the best message in the world and his or her heart can be in the right place, but little good is accomplished if that person takes an angry, defensive or generally negative approach when conversing with others. It is absolutely vital for new parties and movements to create a stark contrast to last year’s “movement” of hatred and anger, and Joel gives us an example of how this is accomplished.
Unknown to Joel, and to me until very recently, his response to a friend of mine concerning the Federalist Party brought back her hope for the future of our country. With her permission–and Joel’s–I am quoting her thoughts and his response to what she refers to as her “jumbled message.” I will call her C.C.
C.C. was disillusioned with many new “conservative” organizations that popped up after the disastrous 2016 election cycle. I told her to message Joel with her concerns because I knew he would give an intelligent and thoughtful answer to every question.
She messaged Joel on Facebook to ask whether or not the Federalist Party was a conservative party. She also did not want to get involved with a “save the GOP” organization, and wanted to make sure that was not the Federalist Party’s goal. Joel’s response was intelligent, thorough and according to my friend, “10 times better” than what she had anticipated.
Joel said:
“Thanks for reaching out, C.C., With regard to your first question, we are absolutely and definitely a separate party. We aren’t interested in saving the GOP – if we were we would have stayed there. This party is going to challenge the GOP and provide a home for people who no longer fit in either of the major parties. As far as ideology, there’s a little more nuance in our identity thus far. Federalism is its own identity – it doesn’t need terms like “conservative” or “liberal” for people to know what it means. Those terms are floating terms – after all, Democrats have become conservative of their 1800s socialist ideas, and our generation’s conservatives, by and large, are the free market progressives of our day. But Federalist doesn’t change with the time – it’s an ideology unto itself, and one enshrined by the Founders.”

C.C. told me she “never heard anything like that before.” Rather, she was expecting the “same old psychobabble” she was getting from other organizations and movements. People like her are part of the exact audience we want to reach: those who never heard of a party that is not defined by a single term or phrase.
C.C. recently described her chat with Joel as “expecting a dollar burger from a fast food joint and getting filet mignon.” Joel also offered an incredibly well-written article to further explain federalism to her, as well as the mission of the Federalist Party. I had to smile when I saw which one it was, as I have always considered it Joel’s best piece.
I was pleasantly surprised when C.C. recently told me that she has since e-mailed that article to more than 50 people. This is a classic ripple effect that began with one person taking the time to give calm, intelligent, sensible answers to someone who felt tossed around on life’s political sea.
The power of positive encounters
We should never underestimate the power of positive encounters. No party can grow or survive if its members and leaders live in a constant state of anger or aggression. Members of the Federalist Party and leaders such as Joel Kurtinitis are shining examples of good people refusing sit on the sidelines as the country goes down in flames. We should model ourselves after such individuals to make the ripple effect stronger every day until our goals are achieved.

Great job Jesse. Tjis shows there is LIGHT THAT WIL DISPELL THE DARKNESS. WE NEED TO HEAR MORE FROM YOU!
I am so glad you are back on the political writing scene. And so are many other people, Jesse!
Are YOU? Cause if ya ain’t ya nothing to comment about, like you could just have a life.
OMG! This was such a cool article! I’m SOOOOO glad she wrote it cause it needs to be told. I SOOOOO hope, no I KNOW you’ll get the front page again. You’ve been on it like, how many times, I lost count. Oooh, I can’t wait for next one so let it be soon!!!!!! Hey, like what happened to my FB? Well, I don’t think she’ll be writing an article about THAT soon!!!! LOLLL!!!!!!!!!!!
I hope Randy reads this on the air this week like he’s been doing with your articles. This was way too cool for words. Real stories are so much better than just telling somebody about a new party.
This article is very encouraging. It’s great to know that we do not have to remain “party orphans,”
but can work together to build something better than the Republican party turned out to be in the end. Thank you, Jesse.
I don’t see the Facebook icons, either, Susan, and I also don’t think Jesse will write an article about it, haha. Maybe the publishers know, or it’s just a fluke of the day!
What a great inspirational article. THANK you, Jesse!!
The Federalist Party seems like the perfect antidote to the venom that is seeping up in the GOP, in the likes of McConnell, Ryan, McCain, and others whose principles seem to be so heavily dependent upon keeping the power-brokers in D.C. – untouchable. There is not much hope, but the Federalist Party gives more hope by far than the fake-conservative Republican Party. I drank the KoolAid, but am disillusioned after all of our grass-roots efforts for conservative Christians led only toward the establishment’s goals in the end. Thanks for the article.
These true stories are the best!!
