AI is terrifying: Infographic

Between science fiction, pop culture, and reality, there are many reasons to fear artificial intelligence. Some embrace it wholeheartedly and cannot wait to to bow to our robot overlords. Others think it’s going to be the end of human existence. Most rest somewhere in the middle with curious skepticism but no real fear.

This infographic breaks down many of the fears we’ve seen come to pass in real life while also pointing to science fiction and pop culture as sources for our fears. Rationally, should we be concerned. That’s up to you.

So much to be thankful for…

So much to be thankful for

I think many Americans don’t understand how truly good we have it here. I’ve travelled a good bit of the world. Some of it was nearly as good of it as our country. Much of it was far, far worse. Nowhere have I ever been does every person, regardless of sex or race, have the opportunity to make their lives better like we do here. We have things some are unhappy about. Some of those things are legitimate, some are just whining about bad decisions they’ve made. One of the greatest things about America is we can keep trying to do better. In other countries “doing better” means finding enough food for your family next week because this week it didn’t happen.

As many of you know, a year and a half ago I was broke, homeless, and living in my truck. All that has changed thanks to regular Americans willing to give me a chance. I now have a great job (two of them, in fact, one of which you’re reading now) and a great place to live. I’m most thankful for my two boys, Andrew and Tommy. I’m spending today with Tommy and later taking him to a movie with a friend and her daughter, AFTER I manage to cook this turkey better than I cooked the cinnamon rolls this morning (epic fail).

Here is what some other great Americans were thankful for today (by their Twitter handles):

I am thankful for 1, waking up this morning 2 my beautiful wife that takes care of me and the rest of my family, 3 that I live in this Country that even with our flaws is the greatest country on earth.

– @rogerthatone

I’m thankful that through all the challenging obstacles and painful scars, God has blessed me with wonderful children. To spend Thanksgiving with my boys is a blessing more valuable than anything else I can imagine. If it were my last day on earth, I’m fulfilled.

– @PoliticallyRYT

Yes I am thankful that I was born exactly 56 years ago this very day on Thanksgiving. I am also thankful that I am the son of a war hero that earned a Silver Star during the Korean War. Most of all I am thankful that my family is one of the 25% of intact black families headed by a working father.

– @WarriorRN61 (Happy birthday to my friend and fellow Army Medical Department Veteran, Jeff Clark)

I am thankful for the support and contributions so many give my @MisfitsPolitics project, the opportunity to share various voices through the site, and being blessed to be a part of so many wonderful groups here where I have made real and lasting friendships. Twitter may be awful sometimes, but there are many smart, funny, & kind people here I have the pleasure to learn from and know. ❤️

– @JHolmsted

I am extremely thankful for Laura, the girl I met this year and the love of my life, out first holidays together.

– @MadFiest

The beauty of adoption. My oldest daughter is adopted. We’ve had the blessing of her being in our life for 11 yrs. She’s 27 now. She’s a beautiful woman and I’m so proud of her. And now we have an amazing grandson from her.

– @tduncan1972

Friends, family, my health, a sound mind and a steady hand (work).

– @KB020911

I’m very grateful to have lived in, loved, and served our messy, difficult, and at times infuriating country. It is still the best hope on Earth for the freedom of all mankind.

– @four4thefire

And from some of my fellow writer’s a team NOQReport, who are some of my favorite great Americans:

Thankful for my wife, daughter and soon-to-be-born baby.

– @FrankelJeremy

Thankful for my family and our wonderful life.

– @terresamonroe

I’m thankful for the many ways my Heavenly Father has blessed my life: my family, my husband, my job, my country.

Happy Thanksgiving to all from the entire team at NOQReport!!

Homeless vet Johnny Bobbit Jr to send additional donations to other charities

Homeless vet who helped woman 20 GoFundMe Kate McClure Johnny Bobbit Jr

Update

The page was taken down for a short time, but public outcry had them put the page back up. They now intend to donate the excess money to others, thus “paying forward the pay it forward.” Here’s the update from the GoFundMe page:

Okay, well that didn’t last very long. We just called Johnny explaining that many people are requesting the donations be left open. He is more than happy with the amount that has been raised so far, and didn’t want to seem like he is taking advantage. For the short time that we took it down, though, it is obvious that people still want to donate to this cause. He said that he has more than a few ideas of where this money can go, which he will explain more in detail tonight. You guys continue to amaze us.

Then, they posted this:

Hey guys, just to clear it up real fast. I’ve seen some things about mark or I deciding where this “extra” money will go. That couldn’t be further from the truth. The second we told Johnny about this, his first thought was to pay forward the pay it forward. He is fully aware of the world wide interest in this over the last few days. It will be his decision and his decision only on what organizations and or private parties he decides to help!! I promised myself I wouldn’t let the very few negative comments or accusations get to me but I couldn’t let THIS one sit. So that being said… I hope everyone had or is having a wonderful thanksgiving and you’re going to hear what Johnny has in mind very shortly!!

Ps. To the thousands of people who took the time to write something nice directed towards Johnny.. believe me, he is seeing all of it and you have no idea how far your kind words are going!!

Original Story

In a feel-good story just in time for Thanksgiving, an act of kindness has turned into a chance for rebuilding.

Kate McClure needed help when her car ran out of gas. That help came from an unexpected source. Homeless U.S. Marine veteran Johnny Bobbit Jr, disheveled and cold in Philadelphia, approached her as she walked to the nearest gas station. He told her to get back in her car and lock the doors. Then he spent his last $20 to buy her gas and get her on her way.

How a homeless man’s selfless act changed his life

https://nypost.com/2017/11/22/how-a-homeless-mans-selfless-act-changed-his-life/“He came back and I was almost in shock,” McClure told The Post.

Bobbit asked for nothing in return — but McClure and her boyfriend stopped by his spot several times in recent weeks, repaying him for the gas money and dropping off clothes.

“We went to Target and got him a big backpack filled with stuff, and he opened the granola bars and offered us one,” she said. “We are like, ‘We just got this for you.’ He’s extremely generous.”

As is growing more common in the age of crowdfunding, McClure and her boyfriend, Mark D’Amico, set up a GoFundMe page with an ambitious goal of $10,000. In less than two weeks, it’s at a quarter of a million dollars. Now that it’s really hitting the news hard, donations are coming in every few minutes.

“This is nuts,” McClure said.

Bobbit has been homeless for a year and a half. He was in a homeless shelter but moved under a bridge when he was robbed there.

With plenty of money for him to get off the streets, acquire transportation, and push forward, he has asked McClure to stop accepting donations:

Johnny asked me to please stop accepting donations today. He is beyond humbled by the amount of support and love he has received over the last few days! He asked, instead of donating to his campaign, to maybe take a second to search for another worthy cause that, for whatever reason, hasn’t gotten the attention his has. Later tonight, we will take some time to post a video with Johnny! He can’t wait to thank all of you and wishes he could individually if possible. Mark and I couldn’t begin to express how grateful we are that you guys made this little fantasy a reality!!

There may still be decent people in the world after all.

Brooklyn College to police: No bathroom for you

Published

Brooklyn College to police No bathroom for you

They say a tree grows in Brooklyn. Those trees might be in new trouble, based on an outrageous bathroom policy by a taxpayer-funded public college trying to keep police – including many officers of color – from going anywhere near its precious students.

Brooklyn College, one of the flagship four-year colleges in the taxpayer-funded City University of New York system, is directing officers in need to a dilapidated, filthy and obscure bathroom at the outskirts of the campus. According to one report, the bathroom has an “out of order” sign on one stall, no soap and no paper towels.

A spokesman for the college said the policy is meant to encourage officers to use the select facility rather than “walking across either quadrangle” (the large grassy spaces between the college’s primary buildings). However, anti-police animus among the student body may be the cause.

The current student government president speculates some students are afraid of the police. A college student newspaper recently tied students’ discomfort to a New York Police Department undercover surveillance operation of students at the campus. The discomfort does not appear to be about crime; when a college maintenance worker got arrested in 2015 for selling cocaine on campus, students protested – the police!

A petition to the college president to ban police from the campus entirely is reportedly being circulated. But don’t count on the college administration stepping in to stop the apparent sanctuary campus policy towards criminals, or terrorists. The college invited Bernie Sanders to be its commencement speaker last spring.

Brooklyn College doesn’t want police using campus bathrooms

https://nypost.com/2017/11/19/brooklyn-college-wants-police-to-use-run-down-bathroom/A visit by The Post to the first-floor men’s room in the WEB — located past the school’s tennis courts and next to its athletic field — revealed a broken toilet with a hideously stained seat and an “OUT OF ORDER” sign taped to the door of its stall.

There was also a total lack of soap and paper towels.
