Many have called Trump’s hostile takeover of a major political party “unprecedented,” but this is not true.
Political parties have been hijacked more than once in U.S. history. A modern day example is the Democrat Party, which was slowly hijacked by socialists, haters of Free Speech, environmental extremists and all the other special interest groups to whom they are now beholden.
However, that is not the only example of how parties can be taken over from within and destroyed. A scenario quite similar to the current Trump fiasco unfolded over 16 decades ago in 1848, when General Zachary Taylor conquered the Whig Party–the latter of which was a major party in America.
A Nasty Guy With No Experience
Taylor was a career soldier who had no political experience at all, but could lay claim to a nasty temperament and a big mouth. He was also said to have uncouth manners and think nothing of using profanity, although unlike Mr. Trump, he did not say the F word in front of 10-year-olds.
In addition, he had a very contradictory record regarding party support, and gave only vague plans concerning how he would run the country. Finally, he had never bothered to vote in a presidential election in the whole of his life.
Nevertheless, Taylor appealed to the uneducated masses because he was an “outsider.” Sadly, Taylor won the nomination to the shock of the true Whig members who could not believe anyone in their party would turn to a man who so clearly held none of their values.
Taylor went on to defeat Lewis Cass, his opponent, who was an experienced Senator and former Cabinet secretary. The Whig Party never recovered.
The Demise of a Major Party
By 1856, a mere eight years after Taylor’s disastrous victory, essentially no Whig Party existed, its reputation having been destroyed by this despicable individual. Taylor is now ranked as one of the five worst U.S. presidents in history. This is a snapshot of what the GOP now faces.
Conservatism Is Not Dead
Many members of the Whig Party were astonished and horrified at the outcome of the election. However, their core beliefs and values did not change simply because fellow party members made a disastrous decision from which there was no recovery. Rather, many members refused to sink with the ship and left the party. By 1856, the Republican Party, which had already gained many anti-slavery Democrats as members, also drew away Whigs from their party in masses. This was another factor that played a major role in the Whig Party’s eventual death.
The GOP now faces a similar fate, with its illustrious leader at a record-breaking 33% approval rating–as of August 3rd, 2017–an administration in utter chaos, and a party that is hemorrhaging members. However, this does not mean conservatism is dead.
Conservatives Cast-Off GOP Baggage to Begin Again
Those who believe that conservatism is over simply because the Republican Party chose to commit suicide should take heart. Conservatives are alive and well. The people who call themselves conservatives, yet elected an amoral, emotionally disturbed, unqualified narcissist are not a factor. That type of “conservative” never has and never will accomplish anything anyway.
It is time for independent thinking individuals to walk away from the Democrat and the Trumplican Parties and develop tunnel vision toward America’s original system of self-government, from which we have greatly strayed.
Some say the GOP was already in a death spiral and Trump just helped it along the way. There is probably a great deal of truth in that statement. At any rate, it is now time for Americans to unshackle themselves from oppressive and corrupt organizations masquerading as political parties, drop the baggage of such associations and begin again from a place of honesty and a truly patriotic agenda.

Yeah…let’s talk turkey for once. The GOP is NOT recovering from what it did to itself
Broadt has an pleasant, unusually witty (“…Taylor’s claim was a nasty temperament and a big mouth…”) and intellectual way of writing which he makes understandable to both the political novice and savvy. I am a conservative with a slight liberal bent, having been a democrat all of my life until ten years ago. I then renounced the Democratic party and became Republican. Now, NEITHER party has a firm grasp on their original principles. I agree with Broadt that it is quite disturbing to realize that even Taylor did not come close to the vulgarity of the Trump administration. Only time will tell if Trump can pull himself out of this quicksand made from a cesspool of lies and debauchery. However, I firmly believe that he was out of time over a year ago. In my opinion, impeachment is the only thing that will start the nation on the long road back to recovery. Thank you, Jesse. It is a pleasure to read your articles.
