Yesterday news broke that Mitch McConnell would put a straight repeal bill similar to the 2015 ObamaCare repeal bill. Senators like Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia and Susan Collins of Maine have announced that they would not support any plan without a replacement bill. Thus, repeal is dead on arrival.
What has changed in two years? All the GOP Senators except for Collins voted for a clean repeal two years ago. Ohio Senator Rob Portman might not vote for a clean repeal either.
Why now after years of campaigning to repeal ObamaCare do these Senators have a change of heart? The answer is, they never had a change of heart. It was a show vote because they knew President Obama would veto the legislation. They never wanted to repeal ObamaCare because their States have significantly expanded Medicare and a repeal would take billions of dollars in welfare spending away from their State.
Even though ObamaCare is destroying the health care industry and billions of dollars of deficit spending is needed to pay for the Medicare expansion, and billions will be necessary for a private health care insurance bailout shortly, the reality is the GOP will never cut government spending. They are addicted to spending.
They are not the party of small government and personal responsibility. Their platform is a lie, and it is time conservatives stop drinking the Kool-Aid and admit to themselves that the party they have been supporting for years are merely Democrat-Lite. They are the same terrible taste but less socialist. Their pitch is, “We know we are heading for a fiscal cliff but we want to go over it at 40 mph instead of the Democrats that want to go over it at 70 mph.”
We know the truth but don’t want to admit it. Just like any addict, the first part of recovery is to acknowledge you’re an addict and need help. We need to confess that we are conservatives that vote for liberals masquerading as conservatives. Until we realize that voting for the supposed lesser of two evils will never get us the government, we long for; we can never progress as a movement.
As for my time, money, energy, and vote, I will not support a Republican that isn’t a strong conservative. We are already losing the battle; we must come to grips with that. The only way we can turn the ship around if we all come together with one voice and state the binary choice of “but Democrats” is over. We will only accept “But Conservatism.”
